i just keep encountering this and it's driving me batty because... i've been HELPING the healers all this time. like i go out of my way to do so. i know it's part of being a good summoner, since i also have a rez spell! BUT SURE OKAY GUESS I'LL DIE, STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO YOU JUMPING UP AND DOWN WITH 2% HEALTH WHILE YOU CAST STONE AGAIN

ANGUISHED SCREAMING etc etc.

i know it's very petty, but one of the pet peeves i have in ffxiv that makes my blood pressure skyrocket

is when i'm in alliance roulette and i'm second or third on aggro from pumping out dps while rezzing people left and right

and then i die to some attack, or get down to low health

and i can look up and see both of the healers spamming stone gormlessly instead of healing/rezzing me

and yeah, it's a pretty analogous situation. some people get really used to the idea that art is something they can (and should) just take, without thinking about it as something that someone made. it boggles my mind sometimes lmao, but i think that may be because i wasn't raised by a pack of hot dogs*

and one of them has autoplaying music on their profile page, which seems to be a thing

me, the sensible person: no don't do that. it's startling and awful and really not user friendly. we cannot do this thing when making our own profile carrds

and for what? you hurt the artist, you are in the moral wrong, you have helped kill fandom, and for what?

a little bit more attention for yourself? boosts and clout that you can feel is for you instead of the actual creators? momentary smugness that people are paying attention to you?

and moral, legal, ethical issues aside - there's a lot more to say on all of those - it's also a shitheel thing to do to your audience.

now somebody who goes "woah! i really like that piece!", because you haven't credited it, is unable to go find more of what interests them. you gave them a dead end. you gave them frustration.

instead of happily participating in fandom culture, you've now killed that pathway for them. you've robbed them of that chance to participate.

that kills fandoms.

fanart is less clear-cut than other types of art theft because of these legal issues which means that profit is nebulous or best. for a fanartist, compensation comes in terms of gaining a wider audience, gaining recognition, etc. and this can directly become ways they keep themselves alive - people who know of them when they open commissions, people who slip them money on ko-fi.

if you're woke enough to see capitalism as exploitative, don't then exploit artists making your free entertainment.

anyway, please don't pretend to be "woke" if you still think art theft is super cool. fanart is always done "on spec". the legal issues of doing it for profit are immense. the only way an artist can receive any sort of recompense for their hours of hard work is through exposure. by not doing something as simple as linking back, you are robbing the artist of the one way they can recoup any of the costs they put into making that piece.

if you respect their labor, don't steal from them.

fun thing is i bet for 80% of that fanart you can trace its source back to a pixiv account with a very frustrated and upset artist who has at least thought about quitting doing fanart altogether because they are so tired of their pieces being reposted without credit or consideration, if not artists that have stopped making fanart altogether for this very reason. but it's all in japanese which means western fans just ignore it because HEE HEE 2B SEXEE THIS MY PICTURR NOOWW.

i guess i should feel bad about naming and shaming but honestly if you write such an absolute pissing fuck of a failure of a bot, i'm going to object loudly to it putting weird shota shit on my fediverse feed with nary a tag or content warning in sight. the fact that the bot's entire purpose is to repost uncredited art is just a cherry on top of the sundae really.

don't be a fucking shitheel assmuppet with your bots, folks

yeah it's "technically safe for work" but sometimes you look at a picture and it's so blatantly obvious it's wank bank material that you just sigh.
