anyway, here's why Harry Potter and the Cursed Child pissed me off so much

sure, the reverse hurt is somewhat addressed as harry wrestles with the massive legacy left on his shoulders. but i think just telling people "you're bad because you're bad" is a huge and bitter blow.

and - honestly - not only does it do readers dirty, it does the story dirty, too.

it takes away agency and interest from voldemort's kid. it makes them an extension of dad, not their own person.

how many of those readers are going to feel that they're *doomed* because of this sort of philosophy?

maybe there's a parent in jail. maybe a bad divorce let them see how one - or both - are nasty and cruel. maybe there's abuse. maybe they're adopted and this is a hard new worry.

and such a story ends up just saying - "well, it's in your blood. you will always end up evil, just like your forebears."

but you know what kills the juicyness there?

if it's just. "well, voldemort's kid is of course evil, because voldemort."

tiresome. TIRESOME!

not only does it leave so much meat on the bone - of someone struggling to deal with the legacy they inherited, sometimes well, sometimes badly - it's also, i think, not a real good moral to push into the heads of young readers (even now grown up).

i mean, how CAN it come down anything less than hard nature over nurture when you've got the villain revealed as this "bad seed" right from his childhood, even before he was ever at Hogwarts?

so honestly - the concept of Cursed Child, the idea of voldemort having a kid - i like that concept. family is messy. family guilt is juicy to pry into. how much does the child pay for the sins of the father?

i mean one of the books is literally called 'and the half-blood prince'. it's not actually a subtle dynamic at play here.

and while the racism ends up rebuked, and some minor characters defy their genetic fates - like draco, or sirius - family is a huge part of the series. and it comes down pretty hard in my opinion on nature instead of nurture.

and why is harry a hero? well, because his parents were. sure, his dad is revealed as something of a shitter. but his mother was pure and saintly, and through her sacrifice created a blood-bond that ends up protecting harry and being crucial to voldemort's ultimate defeat.

not to mention - the idea of being heir to gryffindor, to slytherin, and so on, running thru all of this.

voldemort wasn't just eventually turned to evil. he started out that way, as a kid. he was a bad seed from the start. we see his parents - both terrible in their own right. merope is a rapist; tom sr is callous and cruel.

whatever sympathy for merope as a victim of abuse herself is erased when she is the main cause of voldemort's problems - someone conceived without love cannot themselves love, as the plot point goes.

this is kind of a theme throughout the whole series - the idea of blood ties, how important a family legacy is, and so on.

and rowling tries to make a moral stance that blood isn't everything. the "mudbloods" are heroes. the "purebloods" are often villains. but honestly i feel that falls apart when you actually look at the hero and villain, especially as we learned more of voldemort.

i hasten to add that honestly i've only read summaries, not seen the play/read the script. but i think rowling took an interesting idea, and instead of pushing back against some perhaps-unintentional bullshit in the main series, she just ended up reinforcing the same old shit.

namely, that morality - for the truly important people - is often determined by blood.

the other bonus of ao3 is that i get to blather in the tags, with such classic tags as

"It's going to get weird. I'm going to make it weird"

"m rating sadly not for sex"

"EXTRA SPICY NOT MILD HURT/COMFORT AYYY"

and of course this classic series of tags,

"I got very mad at the Cursed Child because of its terrible execution"
"So I have smacked JK [Rowling] until she got her mitts off the base concept and it is now mine."
"As is the way of all good and decent fanfiction writers."

i actually don't mind the aggressively plain and downright retro navigation/design of fanfiction.net

where they upset me is when they removed the ability to highlight/select text. probably to keep twelve year olds from plagiarism temptations but like. that's. that's how i read on the internet. that's how i mark my place! it's the digital equivalent of a finger along the page!

i mean you can still do it if you go into the mobile version but it does make me mildly disgruntled.

consistently both amazed that i remember the strats after 4-6 months away (if not more, since around christmas i basically was there just for the event), but also kinda dismayed that it seems like i'm the only one remembering the strats in some of these fights

though honestly the last point deserves several fics in and of itself, i'm just not that good at writing political intrigue

i mean even masquerade is like

ok so vader's fighting for the good side now

how fucken awkward is that gonna be for everyone tho

like sure the rebellion is the heroes but also. just imagine having this known war criminal casually sitting in the mess hall with you. imagine having to serve him mashed potatoes. oh man. there's so much juicy bits there

Show thread

for example - yeah i like zutara but i like it mainly as a "the gaang does their own thing for a decade, then zuko and katara meet up and have a big mutual OH FUCK WHEN DID YOU GET HOT moment"

also the political aspect of zutara rarely gets addressed - how does the fire nation take to this? (how does it work with the rebuilt southern water tribe?)

also also what are the ramifications of the fire nation spending 100 years as a colonial war economy and then having that Abruptly Halt

Show thread

tbh i feel like most of what that says about me is that it reveals one of my main motivations for writing fanfic is.... frustration, lol

like, an idea might be popular, commonplace, or even canon! but i feel like so much meat has been left on the bone that i have to get in there and ACTUALLY CARVE UP THOSE TASTY BITS for people to dine on

Show thread

it probably says something about me as a fanfic writer that i am the most delighted by comments expressing that they think the base concept is way too out there, or is very bland, or has been overdone, or is just nonsensical, or usually is something they hate, or should not work, or is otherwise unsuitable

BUT

B U T

THAT I'VE DONE IT IN A WAY THEY ARE ENJOYING IMMENSELY

oh man

those are my favourite fanfic comments ever

maybe my writing brain will come back soon because i need to write another chapter of splatoon/secret world fic, specifically to give a shoutout to the guest who left a comment starting with

"Well, that's quite an ambitious crossover!"

which is the best way anyone has ever said "this is completely batshit fucked you know that right, lol wtf fr tho" to me, and i am ENDLESSLY DELIGHTED by it

If five people were to have a 150k budget to improve your life (a la queer eye) what would you want done?

(Needn’t correspond to the actual talents of the irl fab five: for example you could have one of them be a budget guru who teaches you how to balance a checkbook, if you’d want)

ok ok the dog sleepy is catching up to me, and so is the muscle relaxer
