ok eight-fold atrament is also the moral of "so, shit's kind of fucked up if you start looking at what's actually going on in the setting of splatoon, huh? wow, that's a lot of existential dread underneath the colorful paint, eh?"
but a lot of one-shots and so forth i've written also have that BOY, SHIT'S KINDA FUCKED UP, HUH? moral, sooo
overly-pretentious fanfiction author stupidity
eight-fold atrament: taking care of the environment is a response to being given a gift by previous generations, and to reject it is irresponsible, even if you have been given a difficult mandate
run rabbit run: there is no such thing as too late for redemption
5150: mental illness can strike anyone, and is never going to be magically cured by a relationship - but can be managed into a healthy future with effort

because I HAVE AN ENGLISH DEGREE, THE NAVEL-GAZING IS REQUIRED, here's as best i can figure out the major statements i'm making with my fanfictions
masquerade: recovery is not linear and there is not any one state where someone is fully good forever now. it is a struggle but it is one well worth watching
harry potter and the hangman's riddle: parentage and circumstances of birth do not define you even if they give you hard burdens to carry
not that every single piece of writing needs to be didactic, but... i still feel like having a core moral or statement there makes my fanfiction stronger, or at least more interesting for me to write
Best writing advice I ever got
"Have something to say"
So many creative works just flop, and not for a failure in the execution, but because the whole thing lacks a reason for being in the first place
And this applies to essays for philosophy class, short stories, TV shows, movies, anything
If, at the end of it, the reader is left saying "so what's your point?", that might be on you, the writer
sometimes i miss roleplaying my SWTOR characters a lot, then i remember how the game itself has become distinctly ehhh to me, and also the fact that i neatly laid out my characters and worked to establish goodwill with others and was all excited to finally do *my* character's story arc after helping everyone else's, only to have the guild utterly implode because of other people being assholes
twice.
so, uh, i guess inquisitor achates is just cursed. sorry, dude.
"that was a long tea break, is the kettle on the fritz again?"
"no, just that sith ghost talking at me"
"ah. did he read you his manifesto again?"
"only partially. but it's fine, since i got a really good recipe for vegan buttercream frosting out of the deal"
(force ghost of achates pachai, sith inquisitor voice) you've absolutely fucked up that cup of tea, by the way. don't pour boiling water straight over green tea leaves, you'll burn it horribly. no really, taste it, you see how bitter it is? exactly. you've absolutely messed it up. and you know what's also absolutely messed up is jedi philosophy -
on the plus side, if "uhhh idk sith ruins underneath jedi temple" is canon now for trying to explain that plot hole, it means i have even more justification for declaring that my SWTOR sith character persists up to prequel era at least by being the reason that somewhere in the jedi temple there is a sign in comic sans in a breakroom somewhere reading:
"DO NOT TALK POLITICS WITH GHOST!!!!!!!!!!
(recipes ok)"
well, i'm sure everyone will be pleased to know - despite surgery, my shoulder is still an EXCELLENT barometer, and by that i mean "how do i get insurance to pay for the new therapy that involves building me a porch and a rocking chair so i can squint into the horizon and declare 'storm's comin', i feel it in my bones' when it plays up"
It is not exactly new story and I am not sure if this made the rounds in fediverse but a few days ago #archiveofourown won the hugo award on best related work. We have a huge #FLOSS community here but we don't talk nearly enough about this project.
#ao3 is an unique opensourced project that is not male dominated and also not started by people who were fulltime engineers but fans who decided enough is enough and we need to own our servers.
Congrats to Ao3!
