presently, 1 for 2, for hardware resuscitation this week.

- got my new motherboard for my gaming rig, which had decided to quit POSTing after I tried to FIX THE CLOCK IN BIOS. That machine is now running again, perfectly.
- also got a disk cleaning kit for my Sony Mavica FD-73. unfortunately this model does not like to use cleaning disks, it spins for only a split second before spitting out a drive error. so getting it to read disks again is going to mean taking it apart. sighhhhh

there's a third thing coming in the mail today, an Apple 5x IDE DVD-ROM drive, which will hopefully be in enough working order to correctly respect boot preferences in my G3 blue-and-white and get OS X 10.2 installed on it. we shall, of course, see whether that brings the score up to 2 for 3, or whether i'll have yet another useless IDE optical drive in the collection

@wildweasel huh.. my FD-75 didn't have an issue with a cleaning disk, it spun it for quite a while, that's stange

@wildweasel also, if you don't want to take it apart you can get extra long cotton buds, if you're careful enough to clean the heads without damaging them

on ebay uk those are more readily available than cleaning disks, at least

@mavica_again yeah i'd presume this revision tries to detect whether an inserted disk is magnetic when inserted, and the cleaning disk is not, so it throws the error immediately.

i'll just have to get in the mood to shove anything into this that isn't a disk 😔
