ableism, tech, politics kinda, rant

Reminder that if you think technology is just bad in itself and just doing without it is edgy or punk or whatever, you're probably being ableist.

I wear spectacles for my eyesight, and an exoskeleton on some joints, and have been pretty dependent on a bicycle as a mobility aid at various points in my life (and expect to be again). When I get to the point where leaving the house means using a powerchair, then I'll do that too.

Things like Alexa or whatever aren't terrible simply because they are convenient, it isn't immoral to find that some services make life easier. What is immoral is organising our society in such a way that the easiest and most accessible way for many people, especially oppressed people, to get things they need is to use corporations that treat people so badly.

And yes, boycotts can be part of reorganising things, but I'm still not going to ask e.g. my blind friend to stop using Amazon.

Oh while I'm on the topic of #literature #recommendation:

If you like intelligent #scifi #read (or #listen to) everything by Vandana Singh you can get your hands on.

She. Is. Amazing.

I don't know many authors that blow my mind on a regular basis but she certainly is one (and N. K. Jemisin another ^__^).

I think you can still buy her newest #shortstory collection but she also has a few stories online from Lightspeed etc:

'you' actually *became* a singular pronoun at a particular point in the history of English. this is not clearly true about 'they', which seems to have been the unmarked, ungendered singular pronoun for as long as the recognizable personal pronoun system has been in place

there was, however, a historical moment when a bunch of 'grammarians' (again: made-up job!) with a boner for Romance languages began to insist that 'he' was a gender-neutral pronoun. this seems to have never taken root in the spoken vernacular, ever

@Brennuvargur@fandom.ink @pink_ink I hope that helps. If you have questions feel free to ask

@Brennuvargur@fandom.ink @pink_ink If you own a house or are allowed for making constructional modifications go for lightning arresters. They help to dissipate electric field bubbles before they endanger persons in or around the house. As far as I know those bubbles can be as small as a dozen meter in diameter.

@Brennuvargur@fandom.ink @pink_ink if the hair on your body is rising from electric charge outside get down

@Brennuvargur@fandom.ink @pink_ink The outsides are a bit of an issue: Stay especially away from solitary trees, which act like antennas and draw in the electric field, trees in general, because strong gusts can break off branches or uproot the entire tree, open fields and mountain tops, where your body will be the antenna/highest exposed conductive object.

@Brennuvargur@fandom.ink @pink_ink at least in Europe the power grids are well stabilized against over-voltage. Most supplies have a simple protecting circuit against voltage spikes as well. If a lightning would strike a power line near your house, that could cause some unwanted restarts etc. In Germany those power lines are mostly through earth cables and well protected. So of you safe regularly or you have a device with a battery you are fine.

@shirasade@fandom.ink @Are0h@playvicious.social @lj_writes@fandom.ink @ebeth twitter.com/nkjemisin/status/8 it is pinned on her Twitter acc xD I admit I was lazy before

@shirasade@fandom.ink @lj_writes@fandom.ink @ebeth acoording to cypheroftyr there was an announcement of a Broken Earth RPG yesterday :blobcatsurprised:

@shirasade@fandom.ink @Are0h@playvicious.social @lj_writes@fandom.ink @ebeth she said it's already on its way, as far as I can remember. I have no details, though.

cishet guys be like "did u just assume my gender" bc u referred to them as men instead of toddlers

@lj_writes@fandom.ink my admin always tells me: if it's only stored on one drive, it's not a back-up. Redundancy is key.

the Earth's rotation is slowing down and eventually we'll have to add leap seconds onto every day.

the solution of course, is to increase the rotational speed of the Earth.

We can do this one of 2 ways. We could use spaceguns to fire off mass into the sun in a westerly direction along the equator for a long time. The other thing we could do is drag the mountains to the seafloor, and due to conservation of angular momentum it will increase our rotation speed.

Or we could just add leap seconds.
