I've watched it from the beginning, and I enjoy it, but hubs refuses to watch it - he says it feels exploitive. I understand why he feels that way.

It is a gimmick, with an overly-broad paintbrush, but just as I identified with The Doctor and Seven of Nine trying to figure out their humanity on Voyager, there are aspects of Sean Murphy figuring out how to "people" well that I relate to.

@ScottSoCal yeah, I totally get what you’re saying. I flip between liking it lost my and truly loathing the portrayal. It feels A LOT like how other #marginalized groups are portrayed in media: harmful #stereotypes that the #mainstream finds amusing or familiar. It’s for #ratings really. It’s not to educate or expand minds. #ActuallyAutistic #TheGoodDoctor @fidalgo @actuallyautistic

In part it must be remembered that, in the scheme of things, this is quite old. But also that, as far as I'm aware, in America if they declare a character autistic, then they are restricted in how they are allowed to portray them. But if they code them as autistic, they are much freer by our standards to be more realistic. Of course coding doesn't always make it so easy to spot, or as helpful for awareness.

I would love to have a show called e.g. "Normal Person" that stereotypes neurotypical behaviors.
Maybe with some explanations why the NT behave like they do.

"Wow, this is an unforeseen situation. Let me react in the moment without apprehension or anxiety about misspeaking."

@dirtyoldtown @btaroli @ScottSoCal @fidalgo @actuallyautistic
"Hmm, the elevator light is off and there is a sign 'Out of order'. Let me push the button several times."

@wilbr @dirtyoldtown @btaroli @ScottSoCal @fidalgo @actuallyautistic
That is a very good question.

But aren't these shows about things that neurotypical people find a bit weird/uncommon?

@wakame @dirtyoldtown @btaroli @ScottSoCal @fidalgo @actuallyautistic maybe the situations are uncommon or amusing but I'm not sure any of the characters are particularly neurodiverse, other than maybe Kramer. The problems are pretty pedestrian, just comical

One of the things that started me on the path to this group was a post that wound up on my home feed, talking about "scripting". It was described as rehearsing what you're going to say, before you say it. I've always done that, and I game it out, anticipating where the conversation might go, so I'm ready. Sometimes it winds me up for a confrontation, and sometimes it calms me down, but I always do it.

@ScottSoCal @wakame @btaroli @fidalgo @actuallyautistic Oh god yes. My entire adult life is divided into situations I prepared for endlessly and am told I am very well-spoken and intelligent for based on my reaction and things I had not foreseen that make me react like an alien and everyone wonders what precisely my deal even is.

@dirtyoldtown That is a lesson I learned after I came out the first time. Most of them are so utterly clueless they have no idea how contorted we can be inside. They’ll notice when we misstep a cue but if we’re reeeeallly good at #masking they just have no clue, and are confused even more if we tell them what was really going on. @ScottSoCal @wakame @fidalgo @actuallyautistic

@btaroli @ScottSoCal @wakame @fidalgo @actuallyautistic I'm so tired being told I am "verbal for an autistic person." I mean, YEAH, I sound fine to you because I spend every waking hour practicing human interaction to the extent that I'm exhausted after a half day. But I sound like a weirdo to you the moment I am called upon to say something I have not practiced 37x.

@dirtyoldtown @btaroli @ScottSoCal @wakame @fidalgo @actuallyautistic
We don't just plan ahead for things like vacation travel.

We plan ahead for walking out the front door.

@ScottSoCal oh man yes. Or replaying and reconsidering every part of an interaction after to second guess everything I said in case I need to apologize or just feel awkward about it. 🤣 @dirtyoldtown @wakame @fidalgo @actuallyautistic

@wakame As massively amusing as that would be for we #neurodivergent folks, it would tank in the #ratings because the #mainstream would wonder what was so funny. It reminds me a bit of the mirror world Brian McNaught would propose to #heterosexuals when trying to help them empathize with the experience of #LGBTQ people coming out. Imagine an ND world where #neurotypical folks were the outcasts… #ActuallyAutistic @ScottSoCal @fidalgo @actuallyautistic
