Is developing a Minecraft mod in 2023 worth it with how Microsoft is handling things?
@solonovamax I'm sure it would be a learning experience, im just wondering if going through the trouble of learning all that won't backfire or become obsolete or something because of MS
@SteelWool it depends what you're doing
if you're using published fabric apis, then updating things will be quite easy.
if you're using mixins, depending on what you're mixining into, it may be easy or hard to update.
but your knowledge won't become "obsolete"
@solonovamax right, I just don't trust Microsoft is all lol
@SteelWool to be fair, m$ is going very hands-off and not affecting shit at all
mojang is just doing a lot of mojang moments lol
@SteelWool Im waiting for Hypixel modding... Maybe in some years...
@Schaf wasn't Hytale supposed to include modding?
@SteelWool oh, yes. Totally. But it might be some years until the game comes out
@Schaf can't believe it's been over 4 years already...
@SteelWool same. They looked like they were so ready to release in a year. But then came investmentmoney which opened the doors to sell it bigger multiplatform
@Schaf in the meantime we got Vintage Story! It's a more hands-on experience compared to Minecraft and the official modding tools for the game are really neat
@Schaf @SteelWool you mean hytale?
hytale is taking its sweet ass time lol
@SteelWool i honestly think it isntβ¦
@haui may you elaborate?
Minecraft used to be an awesome game. Then it became popular. Then everyone made servers and mods. Then Microsoft took over and started forcing bedrock/windows version on everyone pumped full of ads and monetization. The player count βseemsβ to rise but I doubt very much that the game is much more than a husk at this point. Iβm actually waiting until they abandon java edition to make everyone watch their ads and buy their stuff and force them to use their servers.
@haui I mean nobody is forcing people to use bedrock over java if you have access to both. Doing that would piss off a huge chunk of their player base (primarily PC), which is not good for business.
Bedrock is a cross-platform recreation of Java for the most part. While maintaining one version only would certainly be cheaper, it would not work out favorably for them if they drop Java altogether due to the modding community.
I hope youβre right. Seeing how the absolute majority of new players in servers goes through bedrock and is so young that theyβre not able to make informed financial decisions Iβd wager that Minecraft is only going downhill from here.
@haui well yeah, being on consoles and mobiles means A) most players will be on those platforms since they're more accessible than computers, and B) there will be lots of kids there, which I assume parents prefer as a safer alternative
@SteelWool absolutely. But packing it to the brim with microtransactions is a deliberate choice by mojang/microsoft.
@SteelWool eh, it depends
will you enjoy it?
if yes, do it, if not, don't
