I've been studying game dev as a hobby for years but I struggle with the practical stuff.

Making a plan, sticking to it, staying within a reasonable scope, not working myself till burnout... these are all things I've done with poor results and I'm not sure what I can do to prevent further frustration. Any advice?

@Calined leaving the scoping issues aside, I feel I don't always have a direction to follow.

I typically start by messing around with whatever engine I have available (usually Pico-8 or Godot) or mentally developing an idea in my mind, but I find it difficult to create a development plan and stick to it.

I believe that knowing what to do next and having other tasks to do if I'm stuck with something will help me prevent burnout, but I seem to have awfully poor planning and discipline.

@SteelWool I can relate to this very much =)
If I don't know the next step, I am not motivated
For me it helps to use a loose trello board an just write down all the things I can think of
Then I have on column "high" which is important or likely the next thing to do
And this column only is supposed to have like 5 items, this way I don't get overwhelmed (helps me to put everything else on a "medium" column)
Something like that?

@Calined Oh boy... I am infamously bad with checklists. I used to have a trello for game dev stuff but it went unused for a long time. (over a year)
