I've been meaning to try out Immersive Engineering for a while now – it's one of the major mods that I've NEVER played, but it seems like my kind of thing.
And I managed to just happen upon this modpack: https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/automaton
which not only includes Immersive Engineering and a bunch of related mods, but also a quest system (which helps you figure out how to progress)

And also: it loads faster than most other modpacks I've played with, so I guess "lightweight and quick" is actually true
