Deadlands, sexism

Every time I read bits of the Deadlands: Reloaded rulebook, I get really inspired and I really want to run a game of it.

And then I get frustrated at the fact that the rule book assumes that every player, and also every CHARACTER is a man.

There's no gender neutral language. It's "when your character does X, he gets Y" all throughout the 290 pages.

The only exception is when a rule depends on gender, and then usually it says "a female gets Y"

also the example that I just read was like:

"if you take this Edge at character creation, you have a deformaty and get a -2 to your charisma. We know it's unfair, but a female with this edge can choose if their deformity is unsettling (-2 charisma) or exotic (+2 charisma)"

Which is just.... so gross

hang on.... I'm looking through the Deadlands classic rulebook, and in that one they use she half of the time.

What the heck??

Why did they remove feminine pronouns from the second version of the game???

Especially since a lot of the actual fluff text is exactly the same as it was before

so now* I choose:

‣ The newer version of the game with better rules
‣ The older version of the game which doesn't constantly feel like it's trying to exclude women

*where "now" is "sometime between now and when I decide to play it

@lizardsquid Deadlands original was written in the 90s, when there was a big effort to be inclusive of women. Deadlands Reloaded will probably have been revived by edgelords, like the new Vampire reboot.
