i sure am glad that the budgeting software i bought & paid for years ago has decided that it is apparently cool and ok to send me an unsolicited ad for their shitty book at 4 in the fucking morning that stole focus from what was doing

i seriously thought i had some malware infection at first until i saw what it was,

@Xkeeper oh gosh, I used the software for a month halfway through last year and was... disturbed by how it worked?

it's hard to explain

also it's a subscription now, you can't just buy it

@lizardsquid yeah. i still have the original one and it works fine ... no subscription here, it's mine forever

you'll have to explain more about what was disturbing about it, though

@Xkeeper the app itself was ok - but they kept sending emails every time they noticed I was slacking off, giving tips for keeping up with my budget

It also felt like something that really did not need a subscription - I could keep track of exactly the same stuff with a few index cards, why would I need to pay $50 a year?

And the main reason I stopped was because I realised my financial problem was not "bad planning" but "not being aware of how much money I had", which doesn't require their app

@lizardsquid oh, haha. you mean the new one, not the old one

yeah that's uh. weird. and creepy. and kind of ... awful. it reminds me of all those "aww you're making us cry" type things from apps that track your usage and get said if you aren't current. like, why are you shaming people if they're busy or not interested

it's definitely not something you need a subscription for, but hurf durf capitalism gotta make money. :(

@lizardsquid i find that the software (ynab4) is still useful even for the "how much money i have" question; because it isn't just how much i have, but how much i have available for certain things. knowing i have 2000 in the bank isnt as useful as knowing i have 2000 in the bank but only 150 of it for spending on whatever, because the rest is bills/groceries/gas/whatever

@Xkeeper for me I only have a very very very small amount of money - I'm currently living significantly below the poverty line - so it's easier to keep track of

@lizardsquid yikes. hope you are doing okay

and yeah if your income/expenses are extremely simple it's not really useful
