well, I discovered that it is not in fact the map compiler that's broken!
but my map
that's good, because it now means I *don't* have to rewrite quake 2's map compiler from scratch
but bad because I don't know why my lights aren't showing up

by default the map editor makes every entity have a colour
the default colour is black
@A_Staccato_Semibreve they did have an effect! they cast light which was black
