I built a heavily customized qemu image and live CD using NixOS as a proof of concept for a client recently, and learned a lot about the modules system in the process, if you have any questions.
I wonder when people will start taking advantage of the fact that you can introspect over the config options and their types. A config GUI, when?

nix feels like a system for intractable command lines
and I still can't figure out why I'm getting "error: The option `boot.growPartition' defined in `/path/to/hardware.nix' does not exist." when trying to build a virtual machine image >_<
