im more and more convinced that schools are a way to extract our creativity out of us and leave us in a more vulnerable state for authoritarian prescriptiveness

@scarly I put a bit more blame on the toy industry

<begin get off my lawn rant>
back in my day we got a cardboard box and made whatever we wanted out of it! and detergent bottles! and sheets and twine! Now all the toys are "this is a <thing>, it does <thing> and nothing else, if you want <thing> instead you have to buy a <thing>"
</end get off my lawn rant>

@troubleMoney hello sea creature friend, this perspective is quite Valid and makes me think of the legos that i was lamenting earlier in the day

@scarly oh yeah, lego and meccano were great, especially when you just picked up a bucketload of the stuff at a boot sale, no instructions, just make whatever

@scarly specifically: schools are for training workers. getting them out of the way of parents so the parents can work is also helpful, but secondary. actually educating anybody is a tertiary goal *at best*. it may be what the teachers want to do, but everything in the way the public school system is structured is systematically designed to train kids to be Good Little Workers.
