Any time I've brought up the topic of electric kettles to a USAian before they've said "Oh, we don't use those because they take too long to boil on our power supply"
I have just learnt from someone in a different country on 120V that that excuse is bullshit and 120V kettles don't take too long at all
WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING ELECTRIC KETTLES NOW AMERICANS?
@InspectorCaracal evidently I've previously been talking to all the wrong americans
@troubleMoney Probably! XD I personally prefer a stove-top kettle, but I also prefer open-flame stoves to electrical elements and putting stuff in a pot to cook for a billion years instead of using a pressure-cooker and I have a hand-crank mixer instead of an electric one, so you can see this is a bit of a trend for me personally and not exactly a statement of inherent qualities. xD
@troubleMoney My tea-enthusiast SIL uses an electric kettle pretty much all the time.
Like, she went to Japan to study Japanese tea ceremony stuff, that's what level of being into tea I'm talking about.
@troubleMoney Huh. Yeah, that's total BS. Maybe once upon a time they were slower, and so have kept that reputation? I keep a stove-top one as backup, but the electric one is way faster.
@troubleMoney Mr. Coffee
Well, for one, microwaves are a far more energy efficient method of bringing a cuppa to boil for one...
But it may interest you to see how that habit you share with your countrymen (except me!) causes grief to the electrical grid:
Britain peak power demand (from BBC TV series: Britain from Above)
No other country in the world has this problem.

My morning tea takes 90 seconds. Poached egg is 65 seconds (and perfect every time).
@troubleMoney P.S. USians are unlikely to answer you, so you'll just have to take my Canadian reply ;-)
@troubleMoney There are a lot of folk tales floating around about electricity, unfortunately. And that 120V vs 230V thing just refuses to die down for some reason
I went to a fairly popular retailer here and found almost no electric kettles
I think a more viable explanation is the popularity of gas stoves makes it seem like a redundant gadget for a lot of us
Also FIRE HEAT GOOD
@troubleMoney yo what, electric kettles are faster to boil and are more efficient though????
was there a famous USA kettle scam
@troubleMoney *blinks*
... as a USian, I have never heard that excuse. I also know several people with electric kettles.
