how do you deal with online communication platforms that are over 99% noise yet still in your face about indicators and notifications?

@DarkWitchClaire Muting a LOT of channels and then when I notice I've muted everything in a server, leaving it. Mostly. :/

Attention economy sucks.

@trysdyn unfortunately we can't mute all the channels in case they have conversations we're interested in

@DarkWitchClaire This is why I disallow notifications for general messages in most every platform I use. Unless someone's speaking directly to me, I should ideally hear nothing and can come in on my own time

@elfi still doesn't help that our brain gets annoying about indicators and there's always a chance one of them will have a conversation we're interested in

@DarkWitchClaire Any new platform I join, I *have* to spend up to an hour exploring notifications, turning them all off, and then turning back on only the tiny few that are actually useful. The modern Web sucks.

@DarkWitchClaire Turn most of the indicators and notifications off, but mostly, limit the amount of places I’m in so there’s less to keep track of.

(This is why I haven’t been poking around the forums and IRC channels you’ve mentioned — I don’t think I could stay on top of them tbh.)

@Lenalia i find that with irc and forums it's a lot easier to engage when you want to and you never feel like you're missing out

@DarkWitchClaire Honestly I think I’d feel like I was missing out even more if I went back to IRC, since I can’t scroll back and see what I missed, while with Discord I can still scroll back and reply to things hours later.

@Lenalia i feel like you don't need to worry about missing out and are just kinda expected to tune out conversations that aren't relevant to you and check back later

not like other platforms that give you an indicator for every conversation
