Plenty of people are advertising instances to switch to, but why should you switch? Here are some reasons:
• Community: Some focus on a certain topic. With those, the "local" timeline is useful to talk about that topic.
• Theme: Some have custom theming or language tweaks that might be fun.
• Performance: Flagship mastodon.social is slow sometimes! Even if you don't notice it might be taking a while for your statuses to propagate.
• Tweaks: Some have extra customizations, like the doodle pad.

Any good resources (text, video,...) about wireless/radio transmission basics out there?

like what has data rate to do with high/low frequency, what actually is this bandwidth thing and what's with SNR, RSSI, dBi...

have to write a summary on all that and I'm tired.

Is there a thing that collects hashtag search results from, say, every instance known to instances.social (or any other large-ish list)?

Otherwise sharing links to hashtag-y things with none-mastodon people is often either "here's mastodon social, i'd rather not always link to that, but it knows the most toots" or "here are 5 links to the results on some smaller instances, please click them all"

The blogosphere suddenly became aware of the existence of Intel ME "spying at you" to paraphrase some catchy titles. If some authors seem to discover that technology, the truth is it is here for almost 10 years!

So, in order for you to make your own educated opinion, I tried to summarize the facts concerning Intel ME and the current state of the community knowledge about that technology.

"To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

That's more than 7 but as you can see is not on my list ^^

new folks:

please remember to make heavy use of CWs

they are there because they are useful to reduce harm for folks

instead of being forced to read a post in order to determine if they want to interact with its contents or not (which is not a choice), you can know what the post is about and choose whether it's worth engaging that or not

@maunzikation That kind of implements deniability/repudiation regarding boosts. Do we want that? Can be a good thing and a bad thing, depending on context. I don't think is a good thing on mastodon.

You can place stuff in home timelines and nobody will ever know that it was you who boosted all that asshole content for example.

@Jules when someone undoes a boost, the boosted toot stays in everyone's timeline, just the note that it /was/ a boost is removed.

wtf is this?
Found this toot in my Home TL.
I never followed that account (and still don't) and it is not shown as a boost.

(These are screenshots of a German toot from an unofficial newspaper account posting a link to an article about facebook and revenge porn, in my home TL. Second screenshot is the profile of the Account, that shows that I don't follow)

Progress report on the Mastodon Light Theme:

icosahedron.website/media/1vYd

It looks like it's pretty okay so far, but I'm gonna need a bit of testing round on this to make sure it's fine.

Anyone willing to beta test this? I can publish the theme real quick on Github.

Question to educators, teachers, tutors, parents, instructors

How do you deal with your students giving up, getting demotivated or stuck and not asking for help?

I know it's partially an anxiety thing but I'm not sure how to get around it.

extra: if possible, how do you get around this in a static, text environment?

And here's the first version ever: github.com/skiant/mastodon-lig

Feel free to send issues for anything that looks broken, preferably with a screenshot!

does anyone know about a software that one can write examinations in, that is specifically for testing students programming knowledge/practice? also i want to be able to write the tests, so premade tests aren't what i'm looking for

the thing is i want to give my students a test, and have automated grading, and would be glad if the software wasn't just for basic tests but could also evaluate and test the output of code.

thank you :)

Mastodon users can play Go on a full 19x19 board with 120 chars to spare.

And on that note, does anyone have codes of conduct or anti-harassment policies they particularly like? We'll be doing our own thing, but input (particularly regarding what you've found works well or poorly) would be much appreciated!

(Boost if you like, I suppose? More input is good.)
