So the argument coming up now that people are calling the RIAA ytdl thing an illegal DMCA notice is "Well it's technically not a takedown notice at ALL, so none of this framework applies"

I've been seeing this loophole more and more as of late, where you move away from the DMCA notice/safe-harbor framework so you have more wiggle room and the big organization sending threats veils it in "We will make your life very difficult if you don't just take this stuff down out of the goodness of your heart".

Mafia bullshit.

Isn't it funny that literally nobody wants the RIAA and yet it continues to exist? Artists don't want it, consumers don't want it. It should, by all rules of economics, not be able to make money.

Really makes you think about all those rules we were taught about business and capitalism eh?

By extension from the RIAA's logic in taking down youtube-dl, they could also take down browsers, curl/wget, compilers and interpreters, systemd, anything electron...

The list goes on.

What they did is evil, and we had this same fight in the late 00s when they DID try to force browsers to implement controls to prevent downloading copyrighted content. That eventually ended in Widevine et al.

For this? The same path would end in Widevine in the OS.
