...okay, to be fair, this really has more to do with the friends I've made in the past year than anything else, lol.
It was just kinda rough this year because I couldn't celebrate with people in meatspace for obvious reasons, but I have all these online friends who... I also couldn't celebrate with for different reasons. :p
Honestly, I need to figure out a different day to celebrate instead and just celebrate that. :p
me: "Hey, it's my birthd--"
People I know this year but never any year before: "um actually that's bad opsec, you shouldn't actually celebrate this thing that's important to you in case a website you signed up for thinks that nobody else could possibly know it ://"
me: "oh, o-okay. it kinda feels like 2020 just took something else of value away from me, but I guess that makes sense. =_="

The other day I read a thread on Twitter about a black Google recruiter’s experience trying to get black people hired. Apparently before she was brought on, they’d never hired someone from an HBCU. And she had to fight tooth and nail to give black people opportunities. Eventually, she was fired for her efforts.
Part of me thought it was maybe a good thing that Google wasn’t interested in me before. But damn, that thread was the perfect example of the sort of systems in place to keep black people out of places we have every right to be in.
You can’t tell me every black person rejected was rejected on merit. The fact that they never considered HBCUs before she joined goes to show the racism involved.
The COVID-19 bill is released and hidden in it are two *enormous* copyright provisions; the Tillis bill that creates a jail felony for streaming infringements, and the "CASE act" that creates a totally new low-friction DMCA-takedown-like court that can levy five-digit fines for…well, pretty much anything, without the checks on abuse a normal court has or (to my read) adequate notice to targets they were even sued.
These have real potential to harm average Internet users.

One fun thing about writing an emulator is you go through a phase where unimplemented functions expose rarely-seen error messages, like this one from SkiFree:
