I guess there's an argument on where to draw the income line on covid relief checks and that's what's holding them up.

Here's my hot take: if you're sitting here whacking off about how much is "too much" to receive aid, maybe you should be looking at how much is "too much" for tax breaks. At all. Any breaks. You'd make 100x more income than you'd save by stiffing someone who makes 50,001 bucks a year out of a one-time check.

Also hotter take: 50k/yr in Arkansas is VASTLY different than 50k/yr in California. In some of the more gentrified places here, 50k is poverty. That in and of itself is a major problem worth unpacking but not this post.

This entire thing is screwed up, friends. Not even on a "people in power are evil" level. It just doesn't make sense on any level.

my dad tells me about computer magazines that would have software in it. like literally just BASIC in a tiny font taking up two pages. and me said it was just a nightmare typing every single character in perfectly for an hour so that at the end you could hit the button and it would like, show a picture of a flag and play a song. he says it with this air of like "it was terrible but it was all we had"

god i would have killed for something like that

as a kid i had a vague sense that someone somewhere "wrote software" but i had no idea what that really meant. you can't tear apart a compiled binary and change things to see what happens the way you can with BASIC printed in a magazine

...not easily, anyway.

for whatever reason people refer to figuring out what bits a fetus has using ultrasounds as a "gender scan", but now I'm imagining someone pulling out a tricorder and going "ah, yes, there is at least one gender around"
