cis reactions to requests for pronouns

@polyphonic @monorail yes, that second paragraph exactly. right now, especially in right-wing/"conservative" groups (but also trickled down through public perception into a lot of the mainstream), "sharing pronouns" = "being trans" = "harass this target." people who are not trans and who make their pronouns visible are not only diffusing the potential for harassment, they're also showing their support to the trans people around them, and helping the trans folk to feel safer sharing their own pronouns.

I've been in spaces before where folks were asked to share their pronouns, and *invariably* there will be one cis male (who has probably never interrogated his own gender assumptions before) who reacts with ridicule, scorn, and "well it's obvious what *my* gender is." when that attitude is in the minority, it's amusing; when it's the majority, or *perceived* to be the majority, it's stifling and threatening for the folks who are trans or who don't fit into the gender binary for any reason.

I hope this helps. :)

...okay, to be fair, this really has more to do with the friends I've made in the past year than anything else, lol.

It was just kinda rough this year because I couldn't celebrate with people in meatspace for obvious reasons, but I have all these online friends who... I also couldn't celebrate with for different reasons. :p

Honestly, I need to figure out a different day to celebrate instead and just celebrate that. :p

me: "Hey, it's my birthd--"

People I know this year but never any year before: "um actually that's bad opsec, you shouldn't actually celebrate this thing that's important to you in case a website you signed up for thinks that nobody else could possibly know it ://"

me: "oh, o-okay. it kinda feels like 2020 just took something else of value away from me, but I guess that makes sense. =_="

Every Christmas I do an all-day stream to try to give people a queer-centric, laid back place to hang out without chintzy Christmas overlay motifs and heavy talk of family and gifts and holiday tropes.

I'mma do that again this year and am gonna try to slam through an early Final Fantasy game in one sitting but the purpose of the stream is to interact and talk with people who need it.

I'm aiming to start around noon PST on Christmas. I'd love to have folks.

I think the most horrifying thing for me is how utterly de-personalizing the dossier on the hacker was, talking about them as "The hacker" and speaking in veiled othering references like "Hackers enjoy boosts to their reputation" as if they were a lesser species being studied.

Like really, anyone in the org thought this was okay??

Every time I think about the Nintendo leak I get just a little bit more aghast at how utterly fucked up it is that Nintendo paid a bunch of people to stalk someone with the intent to gather dirt and a psych profile on them so they could more effectively ambush them at a moment/place of weakness with a team of lawyers and try to coerce them into stopping their hacking activities.

The depth to which they sunk to execute this is chilling and terrifying.

The other day I read a thread on Twitter about a black Google recruiter’s experience trying to get black people hired. Apparently before she was brought on, they’d never hired someone from an HBCU. And she had to fight tooth and nail to give black people opportunities. Eventually, she was fired for her efforts.

Part of me thought it was maybe a good thing that Google wasn’t interested in me before. But damn, that thread was the perfect example of the sort of systems in place to keep black people out of places we have every right to be in.

You can’t tell me every black person rejected was rejected on merit. The fact that they never considered HBCUs before she joined goes to show the racism involved.

The COVID-19 bill is released and hidden in it are two *enormous* copyright provisions; the Tillis bill that creates a jail felony for streaming infringements, and the "CASE act" that creates a totally new low-friction DMCA-takedown-like court that can levy five-digit fines for…well, pretty much anything, without the checks on abuse a normal court has or (to my read) adequate notice to targets they were even sued.

These have real potential to harm average Internet users.

Okay, someone talked me into downloading and setting up VRChat, and even found me a cute robot avatar to use. So, when and where do all the cool queer people hang out? And do I have to be an anthro character, or is cute robot okay? XD
