the reason stealth games are like that is that the guards know what happens to people who actually spot the intruder
they know it's snake under the box, but if they can just maintain plausible deniability, they won't be fired OR have to deal with a solid snake who knows he's been spotted

great ace attorney
aa1 had the "five strikes and you're out" mechanic. the games that came after that used a health bar so different penalties could be worth different amounts
but so far two games have gone back to the five strikes system: plvaa (medieval fantasy world) and great ace attorney (late 1800s)
this leads me to believe that the health bar mechanic exists in-universe and was introduced in mid-2017
please ignore the gaping contradiction in my theory presented by Turnabout Memories
