pessimism

Well so far no one's showed up to me trying to collect people together for modern setting roleplay stuff like I scheduled for today, and if no one shows up at all I'm going to start rethinking things.

I also had complain to me awhile ago that they don't like less serious, more meta characters. So much for "just be yourself and do things if you want to be involved". Maybe it was just that person's opinion and not a wider opinion of the community.

@maple Eat communism!

Yeah I think deriving value from something on the basis that no one else is allowed to enjoy it is wrong.

I've got everything set up for player/block interaction later and I've got some very basic player movement code for now.

One nice aspect of having a cat is that random house noises are very easily dismissed. You never worry that there might be something/someone in the house that shouldn't be because you have something safe to attribute them all to.

No physics yet, but I've got the player graphics uploaded every frame and I played with having her move around.

It amuses me endlessly to see a Gadget Hackwrench avatar in a big company's internal issue tracking site. I also appreciate that I'm allowed to do that; I'd definitely rather have her represent me than a photo of me.

I feel like despite having a full-time job, I can definitely get some real work done on game development as long as I keep getting small amounts of work done most days. They will certainly add up in the long run.

@kelerak I have a really hard time with this too. I generally use weird puns or weird portmanteaus. For my fursona I just looked through a list of space related words.

@maple yeah I got weirded out by people following me just because I said JavaScript a few times

Turns out my scrolling was completely correctly implemented *aside* from the loading seam at the top being one tile too high, which explains why it was so hard to find anything wrong when I was looking for the problem in the wrong places. Now it works!

Someone should do a Genesis/Mega Drive game starring their own fursona and we could be playful rivals hehehe

Starting on a SNES game was really important for my mental health because I have something to look forward to getting back to and working on now, and my creative energy has a nice long-term outlet.

My flashcart should also be home waiting for me!

What kinda art should I try to get in the future? After getting a Maffi pic and an avatar it's sort of up in the air as far as priorities go.

Some ideas I want to do include a pic of Maffi plugging her tail into something, an excessively adorable weapons-grade cute Nova, nonanthro Nova, and some magic themed art maybe involving Nova using a magic wand and lots of sparkles.

Also have some kink stuff I want drawn but that will probably require finding artists who specialize in those. :p

I'm visiting my dad for the weekend for Easter, and my room us in a basement closet there. I'm being reminded that there's few things more frustrating than an unreliable (but not completely nonfunctional) WiFi signal.

When I see squirrels outside I drop everything I'm doing and admire them

Been trying to get vertical scrolling working in my game engine for some number of hours and I think it's time to put things away and sleep. With any luck what I need to do to fix it will be clearer when it's not 3 AM.

On the NES, one of the dreaded things to work with is the attribute table, which is a separate 64-byte structure tacked onto the end of a tilemap which indicates what parts of the background are what palette in an awkward zig-zaggy fashion.

And on the SNES it's just, nonexistent. The tilemap is just a series of 16-bit values that contain a palette number, tile number, and flips, and it's just nice and linear. That's one nice thing about the console.

Level loading isn't in, but level *rendering* is, and I'm just poking some blocks into the buffer before drawing the level.

I'm going to have to implement scrolling, and I'm sort of dreading vertical scrolling since I made it more complicated in exchange for some extra video RAM, but it should be fine anyway.
