Handiest new FOSS tool I've found in quite a while, it can identify content & filetype of files by signatures, which are defined in a scripting language. The Hachoir suite is also quite good but this software brings a whole new set of features. twitter.com/binitamshah/status

@thomasfuchs LOL, created a PHP-based dropbox at my university running on one of these but seriously, all P4s need to be hunted down and destroyed. They exist only to waste energy without any artistic merit.

Coronavirus, Elon Musk

So it turns out that the "ventilators" that Musk was bragging about donating to hospitals (and his fanboys were praising far and wide) turn out to be surplus CPAP machines. Which, if adapted by already overworked hospital staff who probably don't have the parts anyway, can INCREASE the spread of infection.

I'll say it again, every single thing he's done has been a publicity stunt to make him look heroic. Every god damn thing.

@porsupah I promise you: every story about 'lost cosmonauts' is a lie. A couple of Oberg's notes about the Judica-Cordiglia brothers:

jamesoberg.com/judica-cordigli
jamesoberg.com/udica-cordiglia

And some other pieces of his about secret Soviet space disasters. From 1975, and only barely out of date given later knowledge: jamesoberg.com/phantoms.html

And from 1988, again, barely altered by the opening of Soviet archives: jamesoberg.com/usd10.html

@porsupah @Nymphia I need to read the manga but the animated series is really, really, really beautiful. Looks hand drawn but characters are expressive with subtlest nuance, but not mocap at all. Something I’ve never seen in CG before.

A friend's enthusing over Cavalry, a new animation program for macOS and Windows. Currently available as a free public beta:

Luca Signorelli’s The Damned fed thru Tensorflow upRGB neural net looks a bit like stylistic pop art (warning: NSFW probably even though this is on a wall in a chapel)

@porsupah yeah, 23.85fps. Just tried some other footage with fast moving gradients (paints mixing) and blockies hit hard, possibly need to experiment with color modes though like 4:2:0

Mind blown. Experimenting with NVIDIA's HEVC encoder params with most challenging 8k video on YouTube I can find. 2 frames of "Japan Night Aerials in 8K" encoded crf=28 lookahead 32 frames at 5Mb/sec. That's 1/2 DVD bitrate with 100x res. No noticeable detail loss!

Oooh. @Rabit just pointed out this little trove of RISC-V SBC goodies..

Late night messing about on the iPad using Beatmaker3 & LayR synth. Beatmaker3 is nearly FL Studio for iPad while LayR seems to have nothing that comes close.

@mavica No idea, the DSK was my first proper keyboard but I put it away when I got an Emu IV. Might've gotten the 2nd one at a swap meet then forgot about it. Now I'm kind of interested in trying out a Lisp interpreter that someone implemented as a custom OS for these.

Every identical twin movie has to have a scene where someone sees one twin walk out a door and another walks in. Well this happened to me with finding a second Ensoniq Mirage that I totally thought I had put in storage.
