New to Scalzi? If you're a Trekkie, read "Redshirts". It's a send-up that had me rolling on the floor. Right now I'm reading "Kaiju Preservation Society", also very funny. The "Old Man's War" series is what he's probably best known for - 6 books - but I'd hold that off for later. Fuzzy Nation is also good.

@ScottSoCal are the main characters always cis males? Got the impression while browsing your suggested titles on Wiki, and then Salzi wouldn't be for me ATM

Generally, but he's an inclusive author. The one I'm reading now has many characters, most of them aren't identified specifically by gender until you're well into their development, and two of them are identified as they/them.
