Tell us a strange sounding expression from your field of expertise, dear #histodons

Here is mine, from #bookhistory: at some point, you will likely find "defeated and dead copies of a book" offered in the antiquarian book trade.

Unsolicited advice: If you get the Kitchen Aid, get the one with the arms that lift and lower the mixing bowl. The gears in that one are metal, and will last just about forever. The models with the fixed bowl have plastic gears, and they break if you push them too hard.

On my way to Oslo to hang out outside Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

I can fake being "on". I have a personality I've created that I slip on like a set of clothes, and I can do it for a few hours. Then I'm exhausted and need a few days of recharging.

@DangerousFruit @djwfyi I would have to say yes, as I am extremely good at being an occasional extrovert to the point where people who haven’t known me for long look at me like I am lying when I say I am an introvert. They have only seen me when I am β€œ on” which is only .2% of my life.

In CA, if you try to hide assets during a divorce, the court mandated resolution is all the assets you tried to hide go to the other side, plus there's a court fine.

Let's put divorce lawyers in charge of the SEC.

The Mormon Church is being fined 5 million because it hid a 32 billion dollar investment fund. This was not accidental. The SEC proved that both the investment firm and church went to great lengths to knowingly hide these assets. For the folks playing along at home, that’s a fine of 0.016% on the investment. Imagine lying on your taxes and you hid an extra $100K offshore and the IRS said β€œNo sweat, pay us $15.63.” If there are no other repercussions, that’s not a fine, that’s encouragement.

Manchin is the best we can get out of West Virginia, until the coal mines have been closed for two generations, and other jobs have moved in. Both have to happen - if the coal mines close, but there are no new jobs, it's going to be redder than ever.

β€œWe have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”

Ukraine, we are with you.

We have been with you in this existential fight from the beginning.

You have become the centre of our continent.

The place where our values are upheld. Where our freedom is defended. Where the future of Europe is written.

@douglasvb

The roots survived, so they'll be back. We started with a single dwarf banana tree 20 years ago, and it turned into a small forest.

@douglasvb

We're right on the coast in Ventura County, and our banana trees have given up the ghost. It got down to the mid-30s last night, and they're not having it.

@AmishSuperModel

Potential good news: if you ain't had none, and you ain't gonna get none, you're already a none.

Starting to think it might be too late to become a nun.

This argues that - because of the "perils of a public good in private hands" - not just discussion should move from twitter to mastodon, scholarly institutions should now also create instances in the fediverse that make publicly available: papers, data & code.
