Yeah, we've done the same thing. I'm lucky enough to have a ground floor office with a wall of windows. Someone comes in blazing, my office chair is going through one of them, followed by me.

You'd want to get an EE involved (Electrical Engineer). There are several things you'd have to take into account. When you're done, it could all be assembled on a single PCB, in a kit box. Try hooking up with someone on a hobbyist website, something devoted to different uses of a Raspberry. I'm sure someone would be interested to lend a hand. It's a cool idea for a stand-alone controller.
