Their brains are so fried by money, they think they will remain rich even if civilization collapses. If they ever understood that civilization is what makes them rich, that understanding is long gone. They believe they'll still own stuff when the fallout settles.

I do that at work in meetings. They'll start wandering off the topic - or worse, the whole meeting could have been an email - and I have no problem reining it back in.
A customer sent an email with questions about a current contract. The Systems Engineer sent out a meeting invite for next week, to "get on the same page", then forwarded us the email. It was basic stuff, just needed answers. I answered, customer is happy. SE canceled the meeting.
