I read a similar article on the CalMatters website and learned a couple of new things - the idea that homeless are coming here from other places to benefit from the weather and social policies is a myth. 90%+ are from right here in California. And most could have remained housed if they'd had $300-$500 extra a month.
We do have to do better.
Half of the homeless are over 50, and nearly half of those first became homeless after they turned 50". Our brutish and greedy society literally uses people up and throws them away in the name of "freedom". We have to do better. We need affordable housing and universal access to health care. #homelessness

The tech geeks (I speak as a tech geek, myself) want to get into the back-end details, the average user wants to hit a button and have it work. Giving them the details is just confusing and unnecessary.
@panos@calckey.social @kisdra@mastodon.social @mjf_pro@hachyderm.io @tchambers@indieweb.social I've been part of a discussion about this today over on kbin, and the consensus seems to be that the fediverse system is actually a lot simpler and straightforward for the average user than it looks like when we try to explain how it works.
There was a literal person complaining that it was too complicated for them to use federated communities so they just didn't bother, all the while commenting on a kbin thread from a lemmy instance without realizing they were doing so.

I'd tell 16 year old me:
It gets much better than you can imagine, right now. There will be bumps and bruises, but see them all through.
What would you like to tell the 16 year old #ActuallyAutistic you?
Watch for impacted crops - give them plenty of fluids. It helps to gently massage their chest, just below their neck, after feeding.
Our neighbors brought us two baby toucans rescued from a fallen log. These little dinosaurs are loud and fascinating creatures! We've had them for a few days now and are starting to discover their rhythms for eating and rest, and are feeling more confident we'll be able to successfully raise them to the point they can fly free.
If there are any #bird experts out there who might have some advice, feel free to share. Tips are appreciated!
What a fun adventure!
On June 28 I will be starting my new 5-week workshop for #ActuallyAutistic professionals entitled, "Exploring the Autistic Self".
We will be working on a lot of serious topics, many of which aren't conducive speaking about here solely on the Fediverse.
I'm an autistic educator working with my fellow autistics since 2008. Thousands of people have undergone this workshop with me, with 150 just this year. I'd love to have you join our growing community.
While there is a modest tuition, I offer up to 75% off to those who it would cause a financial hardship for, no questions asked or explanations needed.

Letβs get this right. Scientists didnβt fail to communicate the risks of #climatechange, they have been warning us for a century. Our policies are failing because after knowing the risks, fossil fuel companies spent billions of dollars blocking meaningful action on #climate.
Fun fact: a mil is 25.4 microns.
A mil is also 254,000 angstroms.
