Wondering about fellow autistics:

@actuallyautistic

Do any of you find video/audio being out of sync - on your TV, your computer, where ever - to be completely disorienting? I can't watch it. I'm in a telecon right now where the video and audio are about 2 seconds off from each other, and I had to minimize the window, so I was just listening. It's almost a panic reaction, when I can't fix it.

@Veronica_SmarteristGeenyas @DamienMarieAtHope I’m in the U.K. and currently we have the NHS and the Tories are doing their best to run it down to β€˜privatise’ it and run it on the US model.

@simid @Zumbador @hosford42 @actuallyautistic This is the upside of such a broad definition of 'autism spectrum'.

That enabled me to self dx so late in life and become part of a very diverse supportive community and seek out reading that helps me understand the breadth of people's experiences and what we have in common.

If the DSM suddenly switched and excluded me and chopped us all into smaller boxes it wouldn't change what I've learned, but would be regressive.

I think we need both views.

@LordCaramac

Slightly different interpretation: 50 years ago they called us dirty hippie freaks. So we decided to call ourselves proudly, very proudly, freaks. Freaks. And 50 years later I still do.

@yourautisticlife @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics

Judy Singer, you could've just asked the community what we mean, instead of misconstruing our words and making us out to be a cult. Nobody is saying that the condition some call "severe" autism exists. Our beef is with the connotations of that word.

We don't exist along a continuum from normal to broken. There isn't a right way to exist and a wrong way to exist. Different people face different challenges, and for some those challenges are immense. But the value, the *worth*, of a human being is undiminished by disability, however "severe" it may be.

And that is why we say things like, "There is no such thing as severe autism." The fact that you felt the need to betray the neurodiversity movement and add fuel to the ableist fire by calling us a cult is proof that you've misunderstood the message. Either take the time to understand how the movement has grown since you started it, or step back and leave it to the next generation. We've got this.

Are you implying Mitt Romney's advice to avoid college debt - just sell some stocks and bonds to pay for it - might have been out of touch?

I was at a gas station and the stupid gas pump ad machine was yammering "a dirty fuel system can reduce your car's performance" and I hate listening to ads so I snapped back "a dirty fuel system can reduce yer mom's performance" and the woman who was standing RIGHT BEHIND ME for no obvious reason as it's a huge empty gas station did a spit take so hard she shot pepsi out her nose and hit my back with it and then covered her face and started coughing and now neither of us can ever go there again.

trans stuff, please boost for more responses

Trans women and AMAB non-binary people on HRT, did you/do you get symptoms similar to menstruation pain?

I know it happens, but I'm also curious how common it is. And scientific study of effects of transition on the body is still not robust enough for me to get a glimpse of trans people's experiences from there.

Dear Americans

Not a single news outlet aired President Biden's event at the White House just now where he announced over $40 BILLION in investments to expand broadband across America.

When will President Biden get the coverage & credit he deserves? This is why our media fails all of us.

Thank you, President Biden!

@severud

There used to be a federal law that capped interest rates. Reagan got rid of that. Thanks, Ron.

β€œAmericans now owe nearly $1 trillion in credit card debt, a record high, according to the most recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Interest rates on credit cards are also at historic levels, at more than 20%.” apple.news/A1899KkivR_ujCW7TRv

A great example of how to handle a trans character:

1. Deadname is left as jibberish to prevent its use by assholes

2. Deadname does not hold power over the character

@dpnash @actuallyautistic

My psychiatrist on Friday told me that 'there's a stigma around autism', which led to me loudly informing him that I've been living with a stigma my whole life and not having a label did nothing to prevent that.

As you say, just existing was already enough to upset NT people. Being oneself and being accepted felt like conflicting goals.

@tcook

I prefer cards without RFID themselves either, and that very aspect impacted which credit cards I ended up relegating and shifting towards using others, back when it was still novel and I could get cards from different issuers that hadn't implement them.

In other words, financial institutions effectively lost my business by putting RFID on their cards and not offering options without when I called and asked...lol
