I have a friend who sometimes does pet/house sitting and one time she was watching a house and two cats for a couple, but one of the cats was outside at the time she got to their home (let’s call that cat Midnight).

They said it was normal and to just let the cat back in whenever it returned, so when Midnight finally appeared at the patio door later that night, my friend let them in and went to bed.

Over the rest of the weekend, Midnight and the other cat were sort of at odds with one another, but my friend did her best to keep the peace as much as possible.

At the end of the stay, the owners came home and my friend let them know everything went well, but that the cats were kind of weird with one another and asked if that was normal.

The owners seemed concerned, so they looked over at where Midnight was hiding, paused, and finally said β€œuh, that’s not our cat.”

After Reagan, I voted for a "none of the above" candidate until Obama. To me, voting for a Republican today is akin to voting for Christian Nationalism or, Klan as my grandmother called them. She would rise from her grave and snatch the hair from my head the male pattern baldness did not touch if I did.

When they high-fived each other over denying benefits to veterans suffering from burn pit exposure as they did the 9/11 workers, I now would not pee on them if they were on fire.

New account, so I suppose I should do another of these #introductions posts!

I'm Fergus, an autistic science teacher living in Edinburgh. I'm also lots of other things, which I might sometimes feel like an impostor to draw attention to, but I suppose I will anyway. Depending on how you define/gatekeep each of these, I'm some kind of writer, community organiser, photographer/videographer, programmer, web developer, sculptor, giant-puppet-maker, podcaster...

I'm bi, lazily genderqueer, white and Green. Capitalism and kyriarchy are destroying our environment and our humanity, and I resent feeling the need to spend so much of my time fighting the effects of that.

I'm also @ferrous@weirder.earth but it was stressing me out that so many of my friends were on instances that are blocked wholesale over there, even though I get why they're blocked.

On Twitter I'm MxOolong (I haven't quite left yet) and my own site is oolong.co.uk - I've used variations on 'Oolong' online for about quarter of a century now, on account of my love for the tea, but I've started feeling a bit weird about it, and 'ferrous' pleases me. I do contain iron! It's true!

If you've read this far, say hi?

Here is a proper #introduction…

GOP's big "Twitter hearings" backfired BIG time. Instead of proof Dems pressured Twitter we learned Trump as Pres DEMANDED Twitter remove Chrissy Teigen's tweet mocking him. Plus Twitter allowed Trump to spew hate+incite violence in violation of rules. My new MSNBC:

Kudos to the New York Public Library (#NYPL) for mining this vein of gold beneath our feet.

"NYPL has been reviewing the US #Copyright Office’s official…records for [books] whose copyrights haven’t been renewed…The books in question were published between 1923 & 1964, before changes to US copyright law removed the requirement for rights holders to renew their copyrights…Around 65 -75% of rights holders opted not to renew their copyrights."

The classic tawny frogmouth picture shows them looking right at the camera - and I always worry whether the photographer is disturbing them. These 2 did have a bit of a stare at me (after the ravens woke them up) but then were quite animated. Here they are watching a slowly flying insect - they followed it almost 270 degrees. I love the glow of their eyes and the play of light and shade in this. #birds #birdphotography #photography

Black service members who served in wars, were often denied access to the GI Bill when they returned.

So white veterans could get loans for college, or to buy a house. Black veterans could not. This lack of access to affordable education and affordable housing had devastating impacts on Black veteran homelessness.

Black veterans were also denied access to medical care and benefits. This lack of access to healthcare also drove homelessness.

#Introduction

Hello / bonjour!

I’m Jonathan, fleeing from the closure of mastodon.lol and the insanity of the blue bird site. I’m a Canadian gay living in a mountainous province with my soon-to-be-husband and 2 golden retrievers. I’m delightfully introverted with a degree in books yet working in a field of numbers.

I enjoy cooking, baking, pretending I’m good at photography, an assortment of current and past video games, and most things plant related indoors and out.

Expect to get followed by people you are already following as a #MastoMigration is occurring from #MastodonLol, an instance of +18,000 users, to other instances, in advance of it shutting down.

If notifications are turned on, you will get notified you have a new follower but it's really not. It's just someone you already follow with a moved #Mastodon account. It all is done behind the scenes.

Libraries are amazing. That's it. That's the tweet/toot/etc

And @battlingbeaver tells me I should have introduced myself before I just jump in and start posting.

Sorry! I'm Tara. I'm an infectious diseases researcher and Associate Prof at the University of Toronto, and I'm the lead of COVID-19 Resources Canada.

We do the Canadian COVID Forecast, Canadian COVID data reporting, the Canadian Excess Mortality Tracker, and of course, COVID Conversation Zoom sessions supported by me and other volunteer scientists.

It's great to be here at last!
