While we were walking this morning, this American robin landed right in front of me. I took a lot of very detailed pictures of the robin moving around. At one point, I even said out loud, "give me one more pose." I was planning on posting one of those, then I saw this photo of the bird flying across the road. I didn't know I captured that ... happy accident. 🙂

So in my early teens I was shown a short film from the sixties called Johnny Lingo. It was produced by Brigham Young University and distributed by the LDS church.

A man pays eight cows (which is a lot I guess) for a wife whom everyone including her parents considers to be ugly.

People make fun of him for paying so much but then when they come back from their honeymoon everyone discovers she is suddenly beautiful because of the self esteem boost she got from the fact that her husband paid eight cows for her.

This was presented to me as a positive message like "beauty comes from within" or some shit like that. But 13 year old me is sitting there like I'm sorry what. They're trading women for cows??

I'm supposed to get this self esteem thing from..... knowing how many cows I'm worth? Wtf.

They showed us that damned movie so many fucking times and never once explained that buying and selling women as property was wrong.

And they wonder why I blame the church for psychologically damaging me.

Because I can still remember Johnny Fucking Lingo twenty-six years later that's why.
