The date sneaked up on me this year, attacking from behind. Every year on 9/11 I reflect, grateful I survived the attack. This year, I find myself angry. Some of that may be my own loss: my father to COVID this year; my unemployment. But I'm angry on this 22nd anniversary at what has fallen since: at the authoritarianism that overtook this country & threatens the world, racism and bigotry set loose, the pandemic killing still, my own field--journalism--failing to meet these challenges. 1/

A hard day for me too. I had an interview in the building the day before. I was fresh out of college, moving to New York City! I stood in the plaza looking up at those towers filled with joy— to be in a big city (that thinks it is) at the center of the world!

A man was drumming on plastic buckets in the subway. People walking fell in time to the beat. Could I join them?

I kept my promise to myself made the day after. I have never left the city. I joined them.

The received cultural mythology of 9/11 is so far from my actual lived experience of being an adult New Yorker on that day that it breaks my brain (and my heart) to even try to reconcile the two. For those who are younger, question nearly all of the political framing you hear about that day. All these years later, it’s clear Bin Laden got nearly all he wanted, thanks to the predictability of American reactionaries.

@ScottSoCal there was a study done on autistic people that showed that we tend to be more altruistic and are more likely to act in accordance with our values when no one's watching. The study framed this finding as a deficit in our ability to act to our own advantage. To which most people in the community have responded with serious side-eye: 'You mean integrity is a bad thing now?' 😒

A friend has just installed a handwriting app for children, to help them form their letters, using an Apple Pencil on screen, which gives them feedback as to whether they are doing it correctly or not.

It's really cool, except...

There are adverts after Every Single Letter.

Every.

Single.

Letter.

At least 5 seconds.

For an app specifically designed for young children.

Sodding disgusting, IMHO.

Seva attended a pottery class, where he made a small jug. It turned out very well, but it probably needs to be baked? Does anyone know how to do it?

They're not thinking about industrial use and never have--they want it because before it was an industrial good it was an icon of power. Diamonds, too.

That they're industrial commodities now is something they want the effects of but don't want itself, because it belies their beliefs about what makes a good currency.

Yes, when you were born is pretty important. I was born in the mid 50s. If they'd discovered at that time that I was autistic, I would've been put into an asylum and never seen the light of day again.

Thank the Gods they missed me! I was finally diagnosed aged 63, about 5 years ago. After I retired!

So I lived most of my life, and all of my *working* life, not knowing, unable to work out why I was so *very* unlikeable.
