So how come on Mastodon it's called *Instances*, when most - if not all - instances run on a separate "server" (whatever that means these days), but on Discord they're called *Servers*, even though they probably have lots of them running on the same "server"?

long-ish reply

Option 1 would probably be pretty bad, it'd potentially expose your current IP to everybody who posted a link into the chat.
Option 2 would expose whether you are online and present in a channel. But this is usually public information anyway? Disabling previews when "invisible" (where the chat supports it) should fix that? Am I missing something?
Option 3 would need some kind of sign-up I imagine, and would cost money to maintain. Not very practical for an open source thingy.

What would be the privacy implications of a local chat client fetching previews of linked sites and images?
What if every user ran their own proxy (say on a free Heroku instance)?
What if there was a centralized service, how would that be protected from misuse?

I want a , & client with the usability of weechat and the features of Riot!

@ajroach42 @hummingrain Wow, that thing has been around for over 20 years! And it still works on modern system! And is still actively being worked on!

That is AMAZING!

Dear Fediverse,

Soon, some venture capitalist will put $5 million into a startup that offers free fediverse accounts with unlimited storage, etc.

Unless every other instance instantly blocks such a service from Day 1, you can kiss your fediverse goodbye and say hello to a new Gmail. Once network effects kick in, they will make the rules.

It _can_ happen here but you have an opportunity to kill it before it does.

Animated gifs on most public-facing Mastodon pages are auto-paused for accessibility, with a couple of exceptions - one of which is the error page gif, as can be seen here: mastodon.social/oops

This is an #accessibility / #a11y issue.

If this is a problem for you too and you have a Github account, go add your πŸ‘. If you don't have a Github account, give it a boost. ✨

So I signed up for , and the default color scheme is unusable.
It's dark blue (, which has a luminosity component of .35 if I read that correctly) on black!

I can't read anything without turning my screen brightness up, which makes actually light colored stuff hurt my eyes 😦

"Haven't you read that book before?"
"No."
"I'm sure you have."
"No, that was a different me."
"Why, what's changed?"
"I read this book."

Thanks to my library having Switch games, I just played my first round of Tetris in way too long πŸ˜€

I don't know how to write a for !
Tbf, I don't know much , either...

It runs fine in the browser console, but if I run it from greasemonkey it says the elements of the page I want to interact with are null...

I'd love to release this, but I need !

I love mupdf, because of how simple it is and how fast it loads pdfs, but it doesn't support having 2 pages open side by side.

Is there any pdf viewer that is:
* available on linux
* loads really fast
* doesn't have huge chunks of gui (preferrably none)
* and supports 2 pages side by side?

(boosts ok)

"Then... he pays /you/ thirty-five dollars a day to tell him to work faster!"

@jskellogg@tabletop.social @sjbrown I'm not a professional editor in any way (otherwise I'd have to ask for money πŸ˜‰ ) but I can go over it, if you like...
No promises it will make it better, though πŸ˜…

Some days (and especially some nights!) I am one of these "watches a tv season per day" people.
Oops.

This is going to take a little longer than I expected.
A proof of concept is apparently not a finished script πŸ€”

@axelspireseries@mastodon.social If it's like the alt-text bot, it'd be opt-in, right?
I agree that it is a good idea, but opt-out bots really bug me πŸ˜“
