My coach told me she thinks I could handle running the 100km course at Black Canyon next year. I want to do it but I don’t know by what metrics I would decide whether or not it’s safe for me to go back to America. January 2024 isn’t that far away. I don’t have much hope that things will stop getting worse by then, much less get better.

@aquinton On the one hand, I want to suggest you should train for it regardless because even if you don't go it'll be good for you to do (potentially speaking out of ignorance as someone who doesn't know the specifics of marathons). On the other...that's Utah, right? Their power isn't as great as it once was, but that's the seat of the Mormons. I...don't know that's a state I'd suggest my trans loved ones visit.

@wifewolf it’s in Arizona, which is slightly less scary than Utah, but also still pretty sketchy. I have a feeling that next year I am going to stay local (eg Ontario) and focus on races that happen later in the year. As much as I’d love to go back to the desert, I just can’t justify the worry to my family.

@aquinton Mm, I've been hearing some damning things out of Arizona. But yeah, in the southwest basically the only safe ish states are California and New Mexico. Nevada I think is...okay? I'd have to look.

It might be wise, unfortunately, yeah.

@aquinton As a Texas American, no I don't see things getting much better. Of course some places are much safer than others like my city is fine, but it is still a fucking mess here
