I've said this before, but I may as well say it again: more people should be doing 8- and 16-bit homebrewing, Even in assembly language, these have dozens of the friendliest tutorials ever, and the hardest part is just getting a toolchain together that will turn your source code into binaries that *run* on the consoles or in emulators.
I've been putting together quick build-and-run tutorials to close that gap, for a great many systems. Check it out.
Listen to me.

That's it. There's more you can do, but spend a few days with a proper web browser and a real ad blocker and you'll get it.

In case none of the other dozens upon dozens of reasons to quit Chrome and quit Google before were enough.

That is the true definition of malware.
a reminder to all on the Left - part of Mayor Mamdani's success is he is leading with visible joy - participating, being inclusive, and leading with what at least appears to be real genuine joy and pleasure in the success of others as well as in what he is getting to do - for example being the first sitting mayor to participate in the Five Boro bike tour in NYC today (clips are easily found - he's clearly enjoying himself)
It is not easy - there is much to be angry about - but celebrate also
Having had a little password difficulty on my wife's tablet this evening... this @tomgauld.bsky.social cartoon came to mind.... sometimes, trying to recall your password under pressure is just counterproductive!
@tholindeth And when wolfram alpha made mistakes, they were fun, and still usually technically correct!
May the farce be with you.

The safest day on the internet in recent memories was when cloudflare shat itself and all the phishing sites were down.

Cloudflare doing shit like this is the perfect analogy for why cybersecurity is such a shitshow. They even offered their DDoS mitigation services to canonical. They could just like. take down the stresser service, but that doesn't result in money. I'm so sick of this "its acceptable to be on both sides because we like money." travesty we're forced to deal with on a daily basis.
The coreutils Rust rewrite story is pretty funny.
Coreutils are tools like rm, mv, mkdir, etc. Unlike binutils, this isn't a fertile ground for memory safety bugs. But, the rewrite was completed, and in the spirit of progress, Canonical decided to switch.
But do you know what coreutils are a fertile ground for? Race conditions around file creation, deletion, permission setting, and so on. The original code accounted for decades of hard-learned lessons in that space. The Rust rewrite did not:

PS. I'm not dunking on Rust. It's just that... starting over from scratch has its hidden costs.
