Recently one of my professors apologized for her laggy computer "because I have so many PowerPoint presentations opened".
This is a terrible indictment of modern commercial tech. No reasonable laptop made in the last decade should struggle with ANY humanly possible amount of basic slide decks.
These university slide decks aren't any more complex than ones made in 1995 on a 66MHz Pentium 1 CPU with 16MB of RAM.
The wastefulness on display here in modern software is staggering.
So, reading through today's "ai" horror story - link below, it's where this SaaS dude has been vibe coding and let a product called "Replit" have access to prod and apparently delete it - there's something -very- striking that's stood out to me.
The guy asks the 'ai' for what "he" - note the wholly inappropriate anthropomorphization - had done and why.
And then trusts the response.
Now, not to put too fine a point on it, but this is in a context where the human involved has notated -multiple- times that the damn fool thing had made shit up wholesale multiple times.
Why in the fuck did he - the person; I refuse to assign a gender to a machine - trust the LLM's output instead of having transaction logging enabled to audit the actions that the machine had made on the systems in question?
This is some very fucking basic SDLC practice shit that apparently they have failed to implement.
LLM usage rots people's brains, and this is yet more evidence of that.
re: LLM vibe-coding disaster
Replit's pricing page says the serious business base monthly price really is $20. As with everything else involving the toxic snake oil tonic du jour, it's still too much money.
LLM vibe-coding disaster
Hello, Mr. George? How much you pay for the, for the new guy? Twenty bucks? No, too much money. He's no good. No good operator.
PC Gamer, "'I destroyed months of your work in seconds' says AI coding tool after deleting a dev's entire database during a code freeze: 'I panicked instead of thinking'": https://www.pcgamer.com/software/ai/i-destroyed-months-of-your-work-in-seconds-says-ai-coding-tool-after-deleting-a-devs-entire-database-during-a-code-freeze-i-panicked-instead-of-thinking/
re: lewd joke around recent LLM debacle
This Command Will Blow His Mind And Destroy His Database Backups.
Fun fact: in #bash, comments are not limited to scripts. You can write them in interactive sessions too.
This can be useful for leaving yourself a note for later, perhaps on a separate tmux window where you'll be doing the thing.
Comments will also appear in your bash_history, so if someone will be investigating what you're about to do and it's going to be a bad look, you can leave a comment to explain.
Perhaps another useful set of thinking tool questions for addressing diversity and accessibility at its most basic level:
Whose not in the room? Why aren't they there? How would they feel if they knew what was happening in this room?
I think that's something that helped me a lot when trying to understand why there weren't more of x marginalized group in a room. If your looking at your workplace, org, community, fandom, etc and you realize there's no Black people there, that bares examining. If you realize there's no visibly trans or disabled people in your vicinity, that bares examining.
I guarantee you it is not because x marginalized group does not share an interest in your profession, fandom, org, etc. There's something keeping that group from joining that room. Ask yourself why that might be. Have you invited them; have you created a safe space for them?
Have you ever been in a space made for this group in question (where allies are allowed)? What differs from that space and the room you find yourself in where they are not present?
What was different about the trans pride event versus your fandom meetup?
What was different about the disability conference versus your office?
What was different about the Black artists group versus your other artist groups on social media?
Next time you're in the office, at the meetup, signing onto that app, pretend for a moment in your head that someone of that marginalized group is sitting next to you and take note of what everyone is saying and doing. Would you feel comfortable with that behavior knowing they were in the room?
They’ve conquered peaks, crushed trail mix, and made it back to the pickup spot just in time for sunset! The hike was done, the day was winding down, and now? It was time to let the bus do all that walking.
