I'll file a bug report if I can make it happen again.

But why ports? Mainly because audio/pulseaudio is still the most obtuse sound mixer, and it's an optional yet default dependency for several packages I need.

If I understand this correctly the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced yet to go in datacenters that haven't been built yet that will be powered by infrastructure that might never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist and economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".

My tech support patient is a PC with Windows 10 1809. The first thing it did when I turned it on was try and fail to install Windows 10 22H2.

However, it then installed Windows 10 1903 successfully, then refused to even offer 22H2 anymore.

The fix, it turns out, was running Disk Cleanup on system files, and using it to delete previous versions.

Fifty-nine gigabytes (59 GB) of previous versions!

dc is a semi-standard linux/unix RPN calculator. Many years ago, inspired by a code golf challenge, I performed an exhaustive search of digitless dc programs using the character set ~^-/*+|ABCDdEFIinOorvz to find all integers up to 1,000,000. emergent.unpythonic.net/015251

So as we roll towards 2026 I checked my list to find the shortest digitless dc program that produces the output 2026: CiDCAn

This program sets the input radix to "C" (12) then inputs the non-canonical base-13 number DCA (= 13 * 12**2 + 12 * 12 + 10), and finally prints it.

Non-canonical base 12 numbers are used in several upcoming years:

2026 CiDCAn
2027 CiDCBn
2028 CiDCCn
2029 CiDCDn
2030 CiDCEn
2031 CiDCFn
2038 CiDDAn

The current year (2025) can't be written in the same manner, because it would use the digit 9. It is still a 6-character program though: CF F*n. This multiplies the non-canonical base-10 number CF (135) by the non-canonica base10- number F (15).
