When I’m on a software project, I try to listen hard to what everyone is saying, to the words they choose. “Don’t blame me! They asked for it!” is never good enough. I ask critical questions about what people are really thinking, what we’re all hearing each other say, from the start.
I have saved many companies on many projects a whole lot of money (and tears) by using that skill to nip misunderstandings and hidden assumptions in the bud early.
A skill I honed in a Religious Studies course.

@fluttergirly in the programming side at least, understanding logic and control flow and algorithms and stuff like that are more important than knowing a specific language. your skills are already very valuable and anyone who hires you would want to retrain you on the other stuff anyway!

It seems to me that people should be encouraging federation with Threads as a solution to Threads' issues…? like
•you get a reverse chronological timeline, of only and exactly the accounts you follow
•no tracking bullshit
•no spyware
•Meta only sees the explicit interactions you make with Threads users, just like any other cross-instance federation

Say I spin up my own ActivityPub instance and I federate it with Threads. Now I can see the content that's posted there and reply to the people I follow who are there, but I control the way the timeline is presented rather than meta's algorithm, and meta no longer gets their metadata on my device or how I use their platform.

So this is something I've been wondering about the whole "defederate with Threads" thing.
Obviously, *using* Threads is a huge privacy hit. It enables Facebook's surveillance of how many milliseconds you spend looking at which brand adverts and who you've called on the phone and how long and how long you browse each day and when and etc etc.

as a weird gloppy thing I have an inherent right to exist. also I like easy games and think they have a right to exist too.
@Xkeeper that Wanpaku Graffiti thing seems like a possible way to record demo play during development, and then they disabled it for the release? either way, it's cool. I know some games try to write to cart RAM they don't have and then read it back and if they get the correct value they know they're being played on a disk copier, as a form of piracy detection…

I posted this a while back but am reposting for pride month, iI wrote it a few years ago for a Pride open mic event

Prefer Not to Say:
I am filling out yet another form
On which I am asked my gender
And then given only 3 options to choose from
Man, woman, And “prefer not to say”
I have seen it too many times
And as someone who is not a man
And is not a woman
But who has a hell of a lot to say
I will be
From this point forward
Formally requesting
No
I will be DEMANDING
That every form or survey that gives me an option
Of prefer not to say
Also gives me an option
Of prefer to shout
An option of
I have spent far too long being forced “not to say” and I refuse to stay quiet any longer
Or better yet
A blank box
Give me a blank box
And I will write you an epic poem
About how I spent years looking for myself only to realize I was calling out the wrong name
I’ll find a way in 100 characters
To write a thesis
Examining theories of why
Even after countless hits
Each new gut punch of erasure
Somehow hurts as much as the first one did

@madewokherd I typed "final fantasy" and got results with just final or just fantasy in them, or results with words between the two, instead of results that had the literal string "final fantasy" in them
google USED to obey quotes and they were a powerful way to search for, say, exact quotes from a book or article. but now I don't know how to do that anymore
@madewokherd this one ignored quotation marks so I guess I'm still on the lookout for something that lets me type literal text I want to be literally included in the result…
@madewokherd thanks for the rec! I was getting annoyed at duckduckgo ignoring my search terms and had no idea where t even begin looking for a solution. Might as well try this one for a while
