TIL via a DeafBlind TikToker and confirmed via a DuckDuck search that, in an emergency situation, if you are with a (culturally!) DeafBlind person, drawing an X on their back or, barring that, palm, is a way to communicate "We have to get out of here, NO DISCUSSION."

Disability advocates often talk about the importance of not physically grabbing/moving people. Emergencies MAY be an exception but now you know a way to communicate instead!

@hammerhead You can always find the energy to clean another time, but if you neglect the clams, they're gone forever

don't say sociopath/psychopath when you mean fascist/racist challenge 2021

Ya know, sometimes I hear about the state of modern dev tools, especially in web dev*, and become thankful the OS I'm writing is in C, assembly, and the occasional makefile or lex/yacc grammar combo. Like, yikes.

*Okay, almost exclusively in web dev.

My stickers are here! (Well, two of them. Still waiting on the industrial werewolves of the world one, but I'm sure it'll arrive soon enough.)

uspol, re: the coup attempt

It would be like knowing someone's a child pornographer, and merely giving them a slap on the wrist temporary suspension and saying you'll only ban them if they do it again. At that point, if they do it again, I honestly feel you're liable for that. You knew they were problematic and you let them stay anyways. It's no different with Twitter letting Trump stay. 3/3

uspol, re: the coup attempt

And even if you think Twitter shouldn't be held liable for yesterday, they are explicitly allowing him to stay on their platform as long as long as he doesn't try this again. Even if you don't think they should be held liable for yesterday, they are absolutely culpable if he does this again using their platform. 2/3

uspol, re: the coup attempt

So, ostensibly, I support section 230. I think that most people who hate it don't even know what it is. But after the events of yesterday, I think we've finally hit the limit of §230. Twitter has known how bad Trump can be for *years* and let him keep using their platform. Twitter should absolutely, in part, be held liable for what happened. 1/2

So, doctor's appointment yesterday went okay. I was put on 50 µg/day of L-thyroxine. We'll see how well it works and if it needs to be upped or whatever. So, yeah.

@cyberia As to the latter bit, I would guess it's just the hydrogen peroxide breaking down into water and oxygen gas due to light exposure. At least, I'm not aware of any ammonia/hydrogen peroxide reactions that might otherwise be happening, and I can't imagine anything in it is otherwise reacting to the air around it. And since the bottle for the hydrogen peroxide is opaque, that would massively slow down the rate at which the peroxide breaks down.

@cyberia If you think about what you said, their combined effect actually makes sense. Ammonium hydroxide is an effective hair bleaching agent, but it can't just be used since it's a powder. Mix it with hydrogen peroxide cream, and it's now dissolved in a way that allows it to actually be used. And, well, the hydrogen peroxide, though not very effective, might still pick off anything the ammonium hydroxide missed, which might make it more effective than a pure ammonium hydroxide cream.

@cyberia *Well, kinda. As far as I can tell, the ammonium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide don't react with each other. But there would likely be an equilibrium reaction between ammonium hydroxide ((NH4)(OH)) and ammon*ia* + water (NH3 + H2O). I'm not sure how important this is towards the bleaching effect, but it's a caveat to "no reaction" I thought I'd mention.

@cyberia So, long story short, the ammonium hydroxide/hydrogen peroxide thing? There's no reaction there*. As far as I can tell, they don't actually react. Instead, it's two separate bleaching agents being used simultaneously. So, there isn't some stoichiometrically optimal ratio to mix them. As for getting rid of pigmentation, both react with pigments in a way that destroys their ability to absorb light, but I'm honestly not sure exactly what's going on.

to eliminate confusion between windows and linux computers both being called PCs i propose the following scheme
windows: PC
linux: friend

like this:
- mac
- PC
- friend

Holy shit.

I just realized that we're now re-entering a time where there is an actual mac/pc distinction. It's been so long, given that they've both been practically the same hardware since apple moved away from powerpc, but we're going back to the before times, when macs and pcs weren't just same hardware, different case/OS.

Damn.
