@NatVoltaic Best I've got is that a diagonal is basically moving in multiple dimensions. In 2D, it's the only 2 you've got, x and y. In 3D, it could be along 2 (xy, yz, xz) or 3 (xyz) dimensions. Extend that out to 4D (xy, xz, xw, yz, yw, zw, xyz, xyw, xzw, yzw, xyzw), and you get the general ways a bishop moves, then use the added constraint that a bishops moves the same number of spaces in all dimensions it moves in (if it moves ±3 in x, it moves ±3 in y) to get the exact moves.

re: COVID hot take, subtoot

And, again, this is not to say you shouldn't wear an N95 or better. Properly fit-tested and all that, they will help you avoid becoming ill. If the output is also filtered, then they keep you and everyone else safe. This is also not to say masks are an end-all-be-all to stopping COVID. Social distance, stay home, etc., etc. But please also wear *something* over your mouth and nose!

COVID hot take, subtoot

And if you are relaying the first part of that *without* relaying the second part, you're just as bad as anyone out there not wearing a mask. Yes, individually, cloth masks are not protective. But cloth masks do have a fucking protective effect over a group. In particular, they absolutely have a protective effect when a sick person wears one, an effect only made more helpful when *everyone* wears one.

COVID hot take

A normal cloth mask will not protect you. If you want to protect yourself, you need a proper N95 or better respirator.

This does *not* mean you should not wear a normal cloth mask. If your choice is a cloth mask or nothing, WEAR THE GOD DAMNED CLOTH MASK. THE FUCKING THINGS WORK AS A GOD DAMN GROUP EFFORT.

Seriously, we could have had this fucking pandemic under control if everyone had just worn the god damn masks in the first place.

dear manufacturers of anything that has LEDs:

stop making the LEDs painfully bright, painfully blue, and painfully always-on

some people like to put things in the same place they sleep, and when your damn LED is always on, it makes it hard to sleep

The eighth annual international Gender Census 2021 is now open until 10th March!

smartsurvey.co.uk/s/gendercens

It's for anyone whose genders (or lack thereof) aren't described by the M/F binary. It's short and easy, and the results are useful in academia, business and self-advocacy.

Younger sister walked into my room, asked if I wanted “a crabapple”

Lewd (butt!)

I gots some niiice new panties. The number of tails is off, but hey, it's not like they asked.

Ya know, I get why an edit toot function isn't much of an option here, but I wish mastodon had a way to add a caption to an image after the fact without having to outright delete-redraft, especially for things that might've gained traction before you realized you forgot a caption.

(Redraft, because I forgot a caption)

haskal tech tip!

despite what Big MPAA will tell you, there is nothing morally wrong about piracy

So, yeah. Your fun fact of the day: the Casio CTK-2550 does not have a very good soundfont. Similar to this, "Whistle" is just a sine wave. And, well, in the synths, they have a bunch of "Square" and "Sawtooth" synths, but no pure square or sawtooth. I actually joked that the Ocarina setting was a better square wave than the actual square waves. But, hey, what do you expect from a $100 keyboard?

And, okay, maybe you don't believe the scope. Well, here's the audio:

So, I recently bought an oscilloscope and I decided to scope my keyboard. Check this out: here's some traces. The first is from setting 168 "SqrLead3". The second is from setting 164 "Ocarina". Notice anything peculiar? Is it just me or do those waves look awfully similar? (Spoiler alert: They're awfully similar"

Alright. Crisis averted. There was no one in there.
