A basic lesson in METAR

Next, we get visibility and cloud coverage. Visibility is given in statute miles (the SM), so, right now, visibility is 10+ statute miles. (Note that it only ever reads up to 10. So, 10 is implied 10 or more.) Then we get cloud coverage. Here, there are two cloud layers. The letters indicate how much of the sky is covered, the numbers at what altitude (in *hundreds* of feet). So, we have scattered clouds at 2200 and 3300 feet.

The next chunk is wind information. The first three digits give the wind direction in degrees from north. So, 170 would be 170° off north or just off south (southeast by south). The rest is the speed in knots (hence the KT at the end). In this case, we have a wind gust. The digits before the G are the normal wind speeds (19 knots), the digits after are gust speeds (gusting up to 29 knots).

A basic lesson in METAR

The first two are basic information. KGKY is the airport (in this case, Arlington Regional) and 191853Z is the date and time it was issued. The first two digits are the day of the month (19 for, well, the 19th), the last four plus Z is the time *in UTC*. So, 18:53 UTC, KGKY is in CDT (UTC-5:00), so it was issued at 13:53 CDT.

A basic lesson in METAR

METAR is a standardized way of communicating meteorological information in aviation. You probably won't ever need to use it, but I figured I'd give you a short lesson anyways using this METAR string:
KGKY 191853Z 17019G29KT 10SM SCT022 SCT033 26/19 A2990 RMK AO2 PK WND 14032/1843 SLP118 T02610194

Saw this and figured someone on this webbed site would appreciate it.

COVID-19, uni, mh

My uni sent out an email with a survey asking about how prepared we were to do classes online and if we weren't, what would help. It seemed to be asking only about technological preparedness, but I legitimately put for what would help me be more prepared "ADHD meds, probably".

I wonder if anything will come of that.

COVID-19

Why the hell have people bought all the god damn frozen pizzas?! Like, come the fuck on! I spend an hour driving up and down Arlington, walk 2 kilometres through stores and I can't find any of the pizzas I want?! What the utter fuck, people?! What about this disease has made you go, "Quick! I must obtain as many frozen pizzas as I can!"?!

No context

"That's why they call me Mr. BURGERMAN."

Subtoot, slurs mention

Just so you know, if I catch you using transphobic slurs in my presence, knowing that it will cause harm, and defend its usage in that context, I will make life as difficult for you as I can as long as you're in my social proximity.

If you insist on using terms like "d*ckgirl", "h*rm", or any other objectifying terms to refer to others, fuck you, choke on your own feces, you get no quarter.

asthma inhalers, ecofascism, vent

The reason this has become a topic in the discourse now is because generic HFA rescue inhalers are now just hitting the market with FDA approval.

That's ecofascism, folks.

Never, ever let environmentalists tell you that "some human lives" are an acceptable cost to pay for the environment because people died the last time they said that and won. That's not abstract.

That's murder.

asthma inhalers, ecofascism, vent

When CFC inhalers suddenly got replaced by HFA inhaler two things happened:

1) Pharma companies got to disappear their competition in the form of generic CFC inhalers since the FDA and Friends™ decided the new HFA devices could be patented.

2) Rescue inhalers got crappier because HFA doesn't propel albuterol as well as CFC does which means you need more lung power to be able to use your rescue inhaler. Yeah...

So why now?

asthma inhalers, ecofascism, vent

So back in Ye Olde Days of ~20 years ago asthma inhalers used chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) as a propellant. You know, the same CFCs that made holes in the ozone layer. Bad shit for the environment. So they replaced them with inhalers that used hydrofluoroalkane (HFA).

... and suddenly CFC inhalers disappeared from the market and two things happened:

So apparently there was a big "news" thing a few months ago where a bunch of outlets ran stories about how ~big the carbon footprint is for metered dose inhalers~ as if those inhalers aren't often the only thing standing between actual human beings and preventable death.

Fuck you and fuck your fascist fucking greenhouse gas emissions.

Let me tell you a story 'cuz this ain't the first time this happened:

Tomodachi Life happenings

This was seriously unexpected. I gave him the chili to punish him for wasting my time and food only for it to immediately backfire. It was hilarious, and I only wish I had it on tape.
