A picket line is a thing you physically have to cross. A picket is something that people put up, and plan. There are signs, there's information.
This is a haphazard mess against a monopoly, and when it fails people are going to just go "aww shucks".
And I'm seeing a lot of people say that "you're a scab if you watch YouTube", but YouTube has become a ubiquitous part of our lives at this point, especially if we're clicking on links on Twitter, and this protest sprang up practically overnight with no warning.
#YouTubeIsOverParty, if the tag even is related to the boycott, is poorly thought out and poorly planned. It's trending now a 23.7K tweets.
It should have been trending a month ago.
I found out because the tail end of a video basically said "don't go on YouTube yesterday".
Subtoot, trans slur
If you're an artist, please don't tag things that feature or might feature trans folk with terms like "cuntboy". Those sorts of terms are not how you refer to trans people, and if you're, say, doing *pride avatar YCHs*, all it really tells me is you probably don't *actually* care about trans folk and just want a quick paycheck.
This is just an attempt by Twitter to execute on EEE: Embrace the technology, Extend it, then Extinguish it. And he wants to do this because he wants to stop the haemorrhaging of users from Twitter to Fediverse instances. His plan is pretty transparent -- give users the *ILLUSION* of supporting multiple, federated instances. You can bet, though, the money and control will all flow towards him.
Don't give Jack the time of day. He doesn't deserve the benefit of your genius.
The whole Twitter funding decentralized social media thing is a ruse. Y'all are having the wool pulled over your eyes.
Jack is realizing a consistent pattern of people abandoning the dumpster fire that is Twitter for the Fediverse. He *KNOWS* what Mastodon is. He *KNOWS* what ActivityPub is. You can get your *ASS* he's been following us for some time.
that youtube thing
Fucking, get your shit together, organize something, have some actual fucking demands that youtube can't easily evade, then fucking follow through until your demands are met. There are useful things to come out of this, but all of it is realizing you can actually do all the stuff I just mentioned. You're figuring out you can organize. Now, fucking do it *effectively*.
that youtube thing
Is youtube shit? FUCK YES. Are there lots of things that need to change? FUCK YES. Is this one of those things that needs to change? Probably. Should it be the top priority and the sole reason we try to do anything against youtube. NO.
that youtube thing
And guess what! They probably won't come for your favorite youtuber anyways! If they use this clause, it'll be on people like me, who have no subscribers, 4 views, two videos, with the last one posted a year and a half ago! You know, easy targets! Not people watched by a lot of people who'd easily be able to stir up outrage over their channel being shut down! You're yelling at youtube for all the wrong fucking reasons!
that youtube thing
And, finally, the demands themselves. It seems all this fuss is over that clause on youtube being able to shut down "commercially unviable" channels. Spoiler alert: They already could. Another spoiler alert: Any concession will be nothing more than a "There, there, sweetie. We promise we won't hurt you." They may change the ToS, sure, but it'll basically be rewording it in a less controversial manner. They *will* retain that ability.
that youtube thing
Two, the lack of organization. Far smarter people than I have mused on this far better than I, but basically, it's got next to no organization, which really isn't gonna lead to anything. I mean hell, it was barely communicated. Most of the info on it is apparently on youtube of all places, and a lot of people seem to only be finding out about it *as it happens*. I, for one, only learned of it yesterday morning. How are you gonna present any demands with this kinda organizing?
that youtube thing
Yeah, I'm done supporting it for a few reasons.
Let's start with the time limit on it. That's not how strikes and boycotts work people. You don't just do it for a few days. You keep going until you get what you want. This will accomplish *nothing* because the higher ups at youtube *know* they can just wait it out. A few days from now, all but a few of the people supporting this will go right back to using youtube. They can wait.
Birdsite
At any rate, twitter's a hellsite and I don't want it touching this lovely place
Birdsite
So, Jack wants to defederate twitter. Obviously, a lot of our first thoughts is "Isn't that basically just reinventing activitypub?" But do we really want twitter to use activitypub? Like, a lot of people link to twitter for interesting stuff put there. If twitter used activitypub, a lot of existing instances would defederate immediately. Wouldn't that hinder the ability to use those links, or do I not know how mastodon administration works?
