If you're wondering why I switched my network to 10.0.0.0/8, I was having issues with a VM server redirecting to 24.0.0.0/8 from 192.168.0.0/24, and I didn't realize that that was because of the mediawiki config, so I thought that maybe making that change would help. It didn't. And now I'm too lazy to change it back. Besides, it helps keep the stuff on my wifi network separate from the stuff on mom's, since my network pulls from hers (because signal's weak in this corner of the house)
I set off today with a mission to set up a mediawiki instance to use for keeping track of some worldbuilding stuff for the Kirai (and associated cultures) (kinda like I had previously done with a different fictional culture, the Valiri), and, well, I haven't succeeded, but I have got my little bit of the network here on the 10.0.0.0/8 subnet and I'm actually updating my computer for the first time in a while (I mean, I'm going from kernel 5.8.10 to 5.9.2)
The RIAA just got GitHub to ban open source YouTube downloaders.
They don't want anyone to share this code:
mplayer $(echo -s "http://youtube.com/get_video.php?$(curl $youtube_url | sed -n "/watch_fullscreen/s;.*\(video_id.\+\)&title.*;\1;p")&fmt=22")
Woops.

And, yeah, that latter shit happens. I just got a text telling me that I voted in 2018 but not 2016 and I should vote this year. (NB: I wasn't old enough to vote in 2016.) Similarly is the mailing I got with my "voting report card" that ominously warned me that whether or not I vote is a matter of public record. Like, fuck off, you creeps. Stop digging into shit like that, that's fucking creepy stalker behaviour. Leave me the fuck alone.

I look forward to November 4th, when election drama is still happening, but at least my phone stops getting flooded with spam asking me to vote for biden (or, worse, trying to guilt me into voting by citing my past voting record—no, not vote for trump; they at least are smart enough to avoid asking me to do that).
I don't give a shit about being "united" with chuds unless they're serious about unionizing or something, then we'll talk. Short of that, when you get weepy about "our divided country..." the truth is that nobody really cares. It's not a real position, it's not a real view on anything specific enough to matter, you're just stating that conflict is scary and your heart soars when someone in a tweed blazer says in a cool, level-headed tone "I'm worried about the direction we're headed..."

is really great and i love it. but it may not be a bad idea to CW if you use it. when read on a screen reader, it reads out every single character. i don't know about you but hearing "backslash underscore slash bullet underscore bullet slash greater than" over and over seems like it might be a little grating.
A while back, I did a blog post on redoing English orthography. I used a *lot* of "aria-hidden" along with some CSS to replace that stuff with a note for those using screen readers. This is necessary, as some stuff just wouldn't have sounded correct otherwise. I can't do that with Gemini. So, it'd be nice to be able to do that. Some way to say, "Don't read this; it'll sound like gibberish. Read this instead."
Like, if you're on i3, you can *mostly* use your existing i3 config with Sway. Some things will need to be changed, you'll have to switch some programs out (e.g. Scrot), you'll probably want to switch others out (e.g. bemenu for dmenu), and if you're doing multimonitor, you'll have to migrate from Xrandr to, get this, just putting it in your Sway config, but I'd say the maybe an hour that'd take (assuming no major problems) is worth it.
Put it this way: If you don't use a Wacom tablet and you've either got some time to spare to re-setup some stuff or you're using something like GNOME or KDE, I'd absolutely recommend it. If you aren't on those DEs, you'll need to spend some time getting stuff set back up, but with the improvements Wayland is supposed to have, especially security-wise, I'd say it's probably worth it.
This said, I did give Wayland another try. I'd previously been not using it because Wacom tablets are busted, and, well...
They still are.
But they *almost* aren't! I tried playing with Sway, and if it weren't for the fact that there's still some issues, I'd probably be writing this from that, not i3. I actually left saying that I'd check back occasionally to see if it'd started working properly. So, it's *almost* there.
