Today in "Stupid things Kat's done":

I soldered some alligator clip leads onto a 5V power supply, then clipped those leads onto the plugs for the socket and plugged it in. Shortly after, there was a pop and a flash. It turned out, the negative lead had blown right off. It might have also blown the Schottky diode being used for rectification on the output side, given that the max reverse voltage is 40V and I might've passed 120V across it in reverse. Not sure.

misogyny

men don't know how to love women who aren't conventionally beautiful without fetishising them

Fascists make absurd claims that are easily disproven. The facile nature of these claims is part of the tactic. Understand what they are actually saying:

🚫 This conspiracy theory is literally true and correct and you should believe me.

✅ I am a bigot and I can get away with expressing my bigotry in public. You should join me because it's safe to do so.

... so don't argue facts. Fight dirty and shut them down because our lives depend on it. Prove that it isn't safe to be a Nazi.

Subtoot

I was gonna actually complain about something, but fuck it. I'm subtooting you. Yes, you. The beautiful one reading this. (Or handsome, if that more suits your fancy. Or cute or sexy or pretty. Whatever you prefer, really. But don't tell me you're none of those. Because you totally are.)

You're a wonderful person and you're doing a good job. Keep it up!

Love ya,

Kat 💗

I wish everybody knew about outline.com

when "hey you should read article! [link]" leads you to some hideous monstrosity of popups, autoplaying videos, and begging for/demanding money to read the damn text, you can instead:

1. copy the URL
2. paste it into the outline.com box
3. enjoy reading the actual text
4. (optional) say "not today, Satan"

sometimes it doesn't work, for some mysterious, unexplained reason. outline.com sometimes chokes on NYT articles, for example, but other times if I close the tab it's in, open an new tab, and try pasting the url again, it works, so.

anyway yeah! spread the news!

job search (-)

"employment assessments" are gonna be the death of my ability to get a job. i am way too honest about not betraying my own interests and my coworker's interests (and, to some extent, customers' interests) to be """employable""" (read: to do shit that would get my coworkers fired or rip off customers or whatnot in the name of corporate profit) and i am *way* too uncomfortable with lying about that shit to lie.

Shitpost

Not gonna lie, I'm not sure I got the katakana right on that. It's supposed to read "intellectual" (or, rather, "interekutsuaru", the closest you can get in katakana AFAIK), but the google Japanese IME wants to default to hiragana, and I don't actually know my katakana, just some hiragana, so I don't know if that's correct beyond that tsu character, and I even have my doubts on that.

"nerd" is my favorite playful insult, because i am one and i'm reclaiming it and tbh y'all are such nerds too 💖

idk if i could love someone who doesn't have at least one off-the-wall special interest or weird way of looking at the world

re: probably mh (-). i dunno. tangentially? i say spoons.

I'd try using texi2latex, but that's no longer maintained, it's not in the ports tree, and I'm not about to fight with getting it running just to have to correct a lot of its output. I tried doing texi2db followed by db2latex, but that crashed. So, I guess I'm doing this manually.

probably mh (-). i dunno. tangentially? i say spoons.

So, a while back, I started writing a CS textbook using texinfo. Recently, I decided to try switching to roff. I was going to switch back to texinfo, but the first chapter is a *lot* of maths, and I don't know of any way to use the amsmath package in texinfo easily. So, now it's time to start rewriting this textbook *again* in LaTeX.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Have I mentioned I barely have the spoons to work on this?

Dreams

I mean, the entire thing's a bit surreal. Why was I fighting her? Why were Canelo and GGG there? Why were they in high school? Why that other classmate of mine at the table with us? Why did Canelo give me a reddit url of a user whose name was just a number? My dreams are a fucking trip.

This is why I don't believe in any of that "dreams are messages"/"dreams have meaning" bullshit, people. This is why.

And I would note that that bit about me and that classmate is actually true. We did get some crap from other classmates with regards to which of us was smarter. It all just connects together in weird ways, what with that moment, but me knocking her out earlier in the dream.

Dreams

One of the most memorable moments was at that table. For some reason, Canelo and GGG were younger than me and in high school, but were still themselves, and I remember yelling at this classmate of mine about how hard me and the classmate I fought earlier in the dream had it in high school just over which of us was smarter, so imagine how bad it must be for those two having to deal with world champion stuffs.

Dreams

So, the other day, I told you about having a dream in which I knocked out Canelo Alvarez. Last night, the boxing dreams returned, this time featuring me fighting a former classmate of mine and knocking her out (making my dream record 2-0 with 2 knockouts now); sat at a table with Canelo, Golovkin, and a different former classmate of mine and talked; had Canelo give me a reddit URL with what he thought would be a good workout for me; and did some other boxing-related stuff.
