9/11

We were always going to get here, somehow, specific collective trauma or no. We had it locked and loaded. We would have found an excuse to become what we are. And given how we treated the world, someone was going to take a shot at us anyway, so I guess that worked out. Ultimately, remember that while much is said about Obama inheriting Bush's powers, so did Bush inherit from Clinton.

That episode was from 2000 or 2001. That's really what liberals were like back then, happy to watch the moves towards cops getting Imperial Stormtrooper powers to step on dissidents, happy to see climate activists jailed while losing interest in the people who gave us McVeigh. Then 9/11 happened and all the cops were just the WTO cops and everyone could be thrown down the same hole as someone who spiked trees or sabotaged construction equipment.

Something I think about a lot is how absolutely ready late-90s America was to become Terrorism Power Freedom Flag Land. There's a West Wing where one of the characters lambasts stand-ins for the 1999 Seattle WTO protesters. He calls them dilettante hippies and then says "free trade stops wars." This is the event it was referencing, these are the cops and institutional politics it was celebrating.

For months after 9/11, I could look north and see a cloud of pollution from the attacks hovering over Manhattan.

And for the past 18 years, there's dipshits who were never personally threatened by a damn thing going, "I was so scared that day, we need to murder and oppress Muslims"

relatedly if anyone would like to help a trans girl (me) in NYC get a job in tech hmu

Everything you need to know about this country is that the same people screeching for war and about how awful and scary 9/11 was, were the same shits refusing to pay out money to help survivors of the attacks, and all the residents breathing in the awful air pollution that was there for months.

The same ones saying "Support our troops" cut funding to the VA because so many vets were coming home disabled, instead of outright killed, and they didn't want to pay for it.

I remember my Civics teacher being worried about the creeping fascism he saw as ol' Rudy got revved up about being crowned mayor for life, and Bush started passing surveillance laws, and white people were beating Muslim folks in the street. We had soldiers stationed in the subway with assault rifles for a long time. To keep us "safe".

When 9/11 happened, I was a senior in high school, I was a ferry ride away from lower Manhattan, could see smoke from the towers burning outside the window, and classmates were crying and freaking out that their parents were dead.

My biggest fear that day was that we were going to war, but fortunately everything turned out ok oh oops no, everything is even worse than I could ever imagined.

Facebook sucks because you get friend requests from your sister's former roommate, who you haven't seen in 3 years and barely ever talked to

Can't wait for all the dudes in the neighborhood with Blue Lives Matter bumperstickers to start jerking off about the WTC

Someone who experienced 9/11 in a cornfield thousands of miles away and who got furiously insulted when an Islamic center tried to open in lower Manhattan: I was really scared that day, never forget, support the troops, yeehaw
