@Taweret traveler, obtain five cans of chicken and gravy recipe wet food from the pet store.
Chickens are opportunity omnivores; they most commonly eat seeds and insects (this is what they're doing when they peck the ground) but they will often eat small lizards and snakes -- or even young mice! -- when they get the chance.
When fed in captivity, they're obviously much less likely to go hunting around for food, but I could still see it. When we had chickens we never really had to feed em, just because we had so much fenced-in grass for them to wander and eat.
