Queer theorists do two different things when they work with a text: They either look for evidence of historical queer practices, or they produce a queer reading of it.

In the first case, "queer" is useful because it highlights the ambiguity we must grapple with when we study eras that predate our concepts of sexuality or gender. When we say a medieval painting expresses the painter's "homosexual desire", we project the concept of homosexuality onto someone who never encountered it.

I haven't heard the word queer used pejoratively in years. I stopped even thinking of it as a slur. I only see people self-identifying online with it anymore.

For me, this is the best, maybe the only reason, we reclaim slurs. I call myself "gay" and "queer" so that when people tell me "What are you, gay?" (which they have more often than they've called me "queer") I can reply "yes, I am."

"Yes, I am a fucking queer."

For me, just typing that feels incredible. My oppressor's weapon falls limply from his hand. What he was menacingly waving just a second ago has turned to rainbow dust, and now he's all covered in rainbow colours everywhere.
