Over the past 15 years of using #XMPP, I've seen many messengers come and go. People complain about the hassle of switching messengers, but many express a preference for the "simplicity" of gated gardens.... Do they count the cost of switching as well?

A truly sustainable messenger can only be a decentralized protocol, not just an app.

So, i heard you like comics and other books, with some links in them that you can choose, between different bits of those adventures, so they kind of become your own? Oh, you like choosing your own adventure? Well, do i have an exciting blog post for you! ;) kath-leinir.blogspot.com/2021/ @kde@mastodon.technology

This is just a feeler for now, but would people be interested in helping organize a Free Culture conference online?

If so, could you drop me a line?

Take a Moment - but actually, a human moment, as a base unit of time, that we can use when writing software. No, really! :) kath-leinir.blogspot.com/2021/ @kde@mastodon.technology

Hey all! If I were to run a #PinePhone #Photography #Challenge or #Competition, would anyone be interested?

If there were enough interest, I'd even be willing to run it as a weekly challenge.

The rules would be simple:
* Photos must be of the subject described
* Photos must be taken on a PinePhone
* No editing is allowed (with the exception of rotation)
* One entry per person, per week

An example of a subject may be something like "Your Best Friend", which could be your pet dog, a selfie, your partners hand, or your best drinking buddy downing a cold glass of beer.

Or maybe "Minor annoyances", which could mean a misaligned kitchen tile, a parking ticket, or a hole in your sock.

Basically, I'd host a place to upload the pictures, and everyone could vote on them, with the winner either getting the recognition for the fun of it, or if I can find a way of doing it, a prize for coming out on top.

Any takers?

@LinuxLounge

The general idea is to promote the #Pine64 PinePhone, and perhaps gain it a little more attention as a fun device. Also, bringing more attention to the #camera and #megapixels app, which I would like to see get a little love ☺️

Also, on a vaguely related note (Peruse runs on this thing! ;) - my video about the PinePhone is relevant again, as they just opened for preorders of the beta version of what will eventually become the consumer PinePhone, based on Plasma Mobile on Manjaro :) youtu.be/SOlcVXvqJi0 to see the video, or pine64.com/product-category/pi if you already know that it's usd200 well spent ;)

My Season of @kde@mastodon.technology student Mahmoud's just published a blog entry talking about his most recent escapades into the land of comic books in Peruse, and its creator tool as well. Doing some really great work there! :) ma-khalil.github.io/Refining-P

#MeanwhileInRussia, Saint-Petersburg: Police come to anime cosplay event, arrest about 20 teenagers.

They were detained for several hours on grounds of LGBT propaganda and some of the parents weren't allowed to their kids "because of pandemic restrictions".

Earlier this January #Russia banned certain #anime titles.

"Police are warning students and universities not to access Sci-Hub, an "illegal website" that allows users to download scientific research papers normally locked behind expensive subscriptions."

Very bad indeed. That name again: Sci-Hub. Remember it so you can avoid it. Ahem.

@carl@linuxrocks.online Just one of those "what people expect" type situations where... sure, it could be an option but also there's not really a good reason to make it one, so... maybe we could make it explicit that "tall window gets right-aligned you-bubbles, wide window gets all left-aligned", which would be really easy to read for the user... but either of those would probably do the trick :)

@carl@linuxrocks.online Telegram's handling of it's pretty neat - basically, sufficiently narrow and you get the right/left split because it reads comfortably (basically what you have here), but wider and you get all same-aligned, and... it works pretty well :) (i have a weird one where my display's so wide that half the width of my display's still too wide, so i've got a lop-sided look on my chat VD, but even then, it works :) )

Hey, if you're one of the ppl saying cryptoart will *finally* let you "support indie artists" - most of us already have a Ko-fi tipjar/patreon/comissions/various stores linked in our bios or pinned messages. If you haven't done that yet you weren't even trying.

@aldersprig If audio fits, thevoice.dog is narrated short fiction, and the main requirement for submissions is "no downers", so maybe that's an option :)
