#ChatGPT and its ilk are effectively a large-scale DDoS attack on not only specific tasks (such as teaching, software maintenance and fiction editing) but on human creative inspiration, sense of self and ability to make meaning of the universe.

notice how they are
- creating work for us rather than saving us work
- automating inherently energizing and rewarding tasks such as making art rather than tiring and tedious tasks such as filing taxes
- flooding social networks with generated content that makes it harder to connect with real humans and build community
- distracting us with questions like “what if this machine is sentient?” which keep us from noticing and acting to prevent the suffering of actual humans

that thing where all search engines have become basically unusable because they’re stuffed full of AI garbage? i fear that’s about to happen to everything.

i don’t believe this is necessarily intentional, but no machine that learns under capitalism can imagine another world.

urgent call for UK LGBTQ allyship

Come on folks, I know it's unlikely to move the gov either way but it's disgusting that more than twice as many people want this gay/trans/other erasure, another effective section 38, than are willing to speak out against it. They'll only claim "most people agree with us".

Sign the petition if you haven't already, boost if you have. Fuck this shower of hateful pricks.

Please consider writing your hashtags in upper camelcase so screen readers have a chance at figuring them out.

#whyistayonmastodon sounds like an giant undecipherable mess of sounds.

#WhyIStayOnMastodon reads out "Why I Stay On Mastodon" 😄

(Reason #44 I stay here: my previous requests like this have been generally well-received, proving that most people are awesome.)

I very recently learned that the term “boycott” comes from someone’s actual name: Charles Boycott. Boycott was an English land agent who tried, in 1880, to collect unpayable rents from Irish peasants on behalf of an English aristocrat landlord. When he failed to collect the rents, he tried evicting the tenants. The Irish Land League responded with a campaign to ignore Boycott’s orders and isolate him socially and economically.

They not only ignored his eviction orders and threw manure at his process servers, but refused to deliver his mail or sell him food.

It was pretty effective—the British government eventually had to deploy a thousand soldiers (naturally, because the state works for the propertied class and none more than the 19th century British state) at a cost of some £10,000 to harvest £500 worth of crops. Boycott had to be evacuated by the soldiers, who even had to drive him out, as no locals would agree to drive his carriage out of the region.

Imagine being cancelled so hard that your name becomes permanently associated with getting cancelled.

Right now, the entire country of Denmark is using 4.245MW of electricity.

Windmills are producing: 3.442 MW
Solar is producing: 746 MW

So if we do the math, wind + solar = 98.7% of our energy use right now is 100% renewable

Just a reminder that not only can we fix climate change, we are fixing it.

@the_gneech our place looked like that near enough two years after we moved in... Still plenty of unopened boxes, too, after nearly five. I have no doubt you will do better than us, though :)

Got a bit of an odd poll question but I'm trying to think about something and I'd appreciate it if people voted and commented

Boosting is welcome

I'm particularly interested in hearing from those with rejection sensitive dysphoria and also have people pleasing as a trait:

have you ever had someone sincerely apologize to you?

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the #Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003, and replaced it with a restored stream and 1000 acre park in the city’s centre, not only did it transform the city’s public life and economic success, but the vehicle traffic got better.

The traffic got BETTER.

If you're looking for ways to show love and support for trans/LGBTQI+ creators, the "Trans Witches are Witches" itch.io bundle is a great option:

"A bundle of witchcraft and wizardry without the transphobia, antisemitism, and alt-right grifters. Reject Hogwarts Legacy's bigotry and support independent LGBTQ+ creators."

Next I'll work on text-in-shape and white space fixes. After the next item is to work on the text tool itself.

If you have any strong (or even luke-warm) opinions about that, I've made a krita-artists thread for it: krita-artists.org/t/text-tool-

I'd love to hear what people think is especially important as I myself have seen one text-tool too many by now.

Regular reminder: "bioplastics" are NOT better for the environment, and "biodegradable" plastics don't biodegrade unless they're in an industrial composter. The focus needs to be on reducing unnecessary plastic use, and closing the loop on everything else. Making plastic out of corn/bamboo instead really doesn't help. #Ocean #Pollution #Bioplastics See here for more:

....Speaking of furries and content.... I do want to try putting it out there again that I'm a #furry that enjoys #WebDesign. While I still leave graphic work to the professionals, I enjoy helping people build a site/space for thier content....and help them feel like the space belongs to them.

While hosting costs (and online store function) can be costly, I will always feel it's a good idea to have your content displayed on something you can control. ....

@carlschwan @givemefoxes @ariadne The owner is Andrew Shoben, and there's a handy presentation from a couple of years ago at akademy with him and i, where he shows more details on what he does, and i talk a bit about the kde connection. “To a homophobe, even the most chaste kiss on the cheek between gay people is exactly as disgusting and degenerate as a hardcore BDSM orgy hosted in the town square, so you may as well ally with the BDSM orgy enthusiasts to throw bricks at the cops who are going try and arrest all of you together anyway.”

@qdot @buttplugio but yeah, maybe it just outright doesn't let you scan in the background like that... would seem a little odd, but maybe it's a "because user safety" type decision, like to stop people... wardriving bluetooth devices or something?

@qdot @buttplugio hmmmm... that's foreground service stuff.. maybe you need to throw up the "i'm still alive" notification to let it remain awake, i think it gets paused otherwise (not actually sure for scanning, but it'd make sense...i only know i have to do that for the tail service to keep doing things while the display is off)

@buttplugio For android 12 and up, bluetooth_scan (and bluetooth_connect), for below you need access_fine_location, and bluetooth_admin... i think, have been spending some time with that the last few days - it's in Crumpet's manifest if you want a look (think you're in the chat?)
